I've been trying to learn the radar on the boat. I thought I better try it on a calm day heading down the south bay. While at it, I shot some pictures of what I saw and posted them to my photo album.

I'm finding that radar needs a lot of interpretation, so you need to work at it. If any of you experts care to comment, I would enjoy learning from you.

My book on radar said the best range for dodging ships is the 3 mile range. I think the pictures bear that out.

Actually, according to my CG Aux training, you should practice with your radar every time you are on the water. Don't just use it once or twice and then wait for a foggy day and try to figure out what you are seeing [or not seeing!]. Also, if you are involved in an accident on the water whether or not you have the radar on and are using it may become part of the determination of responsibility. Basically, if you have radar and do not use it and then have a collision, you may be found more at fault for not using all of the safety devices available to you.
