Rays out east

I've been seeing more and more rays each summer and this year's been no exception. Been connected to a few of these in the past few weeks...a Mottled tan color, very thick with smooth skin. Long tail with quite a weapon at its base. Wingspan between 3-5'....great fighting....one even straighten a circle hook.
All this while fluke fishing in both the ocean and bay.

Guys surf casting landed a couple saturday on Fire Island. Between Atlantique and Ocean Beach.

Saw them out of Jones inlet a few years ago, don't think I've seen them since. Saw an article recently mentioning they were common this year, they had a specific name for them which now I can't remember.

i used to see the large black backed ones but am now seeing these mottled tan ones...they're much thicker and put up a real nice fight. Now, if they're edible....not sure I want them in the boat with the tail with harpoon swinging...
