I just replaced my manual head with a ME and converted to fresh water flush. Now i'm thinking of eliminating the Y valve since I never go offshore and directly routing the line to the tank. By eliminating the vented loop and valve I can eliminate about 8 ft of 1 1/2 line. Any down side of doing this? Should I replace with 1 1/2 or downsize to 1 line to minimize the amount of flushing to clear the line to the tank.

Not sure about the vented loop issue but I would not go smaller than 1 1/2 inches for the line. Keep in mind your home line is at least 4 inches and it handles a very similar "load" as your boat head. Removing clogs is a real sh!tty job.

The ME has an internal vented loop and will hold water in the bowl just fine. As far as 1.5" or 1", the choice is yours. The ME dischasrges thru 1"..

When I put a new head and holding tank in I used 1 1/2 inch PVC pipe except for two short pieces, one right at the head itself and the other at the pump-out deck fitting. If there is no path to the water in the discharge line or holding tank you don't need the vented loop to prevent the backflow of outside water into the head.

if you never go offshore, you may as well get rid of the Y valve and vented loop and run the hose from the head straight to the tank. you can then cap the discharge sea cock and maybe remove it at the next haul out, or use it for a macerator, raw water wash down, back up AC pump, etc...

i woudl keep the 1 1/2 hose though, no real benefits to going smaller. That said you can't compare the "load" handled by a 4" home toilet and a marine head since the head processes the solids before sending them into the smaller line.

Last year, I did exactly that: removed the Y and vented loop, ran the hose straight to the holding tank, and capped off the seacock for the remainder of the season. In the off-season, I turned the seacock into an intake for a raw water anchor washdown. It was actually somewhat difficult to find the right fittings to reduce the seacock to the right diameter for the intake hose.

Here's the list to turn a 1.5" seacock to 3/4" intake. BoatFix has some of it, and they can probably get all 3 if you talk to someone to special order it. I got them from Torresen because they had all 3 in stock:
