I pulled apart the exhaust on my 454 crusaders, log style manifolds, because the joints were rusty due to leaks I assume. The 8 inch risers ( 97169) look good, but the elbows ( 97386) do not. So I ordered 4 replacements.

First question, any tricks to removing old gaskets? I have various scrapers, but especially for the outboard side it’s not that easy to get close. Sandpaper? Roloc on a die grinder? I think Ive tried the various gasket remover sprays in the past - crc, permatex, etc. but they didn’t seem to make any difference. Not sure I can even get a socket into these tight spots, but if I can, anyone know the torque specs? Can’t seem to find consent info on that, for riser to manifold and elbow to riser. Thanks !

Mine had the same type risers and elbows, replaced them myself. A razor removed the old gaskets well enough.

I miss the twin 454's..

alk, I watched closely when I had this done last season (second time for me), and the guy used a long handed scraper with a sharp razor blade, then cleaned them up with a non abrasive flap disc on his drill. For me it was engine side only that he had to do, as I replaced the manifolds, risers and elbows. He just took his time so he wouldn't gouge the metal. All new gaskets went on dry, and not a drop leaks.

I was able to squeeze myself between the aft bulkhead and the back of the motors to get at the outboard side joint between the old risers and new elbows with a razor blade scraper, and gasket scraper - I think I had them very clean. Probably going to wait another week before I run the motors to confirm no leaks. Weather looks ok, but still remember 20 years ago when I had to re-winterize in mid April. Don’t want to make that mistake again.
