With respect to the trim cylinders, there are seal kits, rebuild kits and new cylinders. At what point do you need a rebuild kit and at what point a new cylinder?

There is a seal on one of mine that is loose, so I at least need a seal kit.

I have heard some people say the reseal and/or rebuild ones leak in short time and better to purchase new ones.

I resealed my trim cylinders about 10 years ago. The oil in the pump still looks good. When I did that I took the pump out of the boat and took the resevoir off and cleaned it out. Lots of scum in there. No leaks and the oil looks clean. I have a '88 merc alpha 1. I put about 125 hours on the boat each year.

Ditto! Did a reseal on mine over 10 years ago. Have done a half dozen before and after.

Do you have an instruction or repair manual? It's real simple but you have to keep the repair/assembly area CLEAN.
