Replacement for black vinyl - 1989 Montego

On our 1989 2357 Montego, the area between the helm and windshield is covered with a black, adhesive backed material that I guess is supposed to look like leather. Sort of like contact paper.

It is really showing its age and starting to come up in multiple places.

I've thought of using carpet, StarBoard and SeaDek as a replacement. Any pros/cons?

I've got a template and should be able to do it in one piece.

What have others done?

I have the same stuff on my 1986 3297 Mariner. Mine is coming up as well and looks like junk. I can see the glue still stuck to the fiberglass. I would be interested as well to hear if anyone has removed, changed, or ?? to theirs.

I am contemplating just pulling it all off and trying to somehow remove the glue remnants, but not sure how that is going to work...
 
I replaced mine with carpet. Gave a template to a car headliner/dash cover shop and they made one with the edging all sewn in. Looks good and I can take it off during the winter. The stuff you have is called "Nautalex" and is still available-just google it.
 
I pulled mine up and painted it with a grey dull paint to keep the glare down. looks really good, and very wearable and washable. You can use any color you want.

It actually came off fairly easy. Plastic scraper and acetone...saturate it with the acetone and scrape with the plastic scraper.
 
We replaced our with a ruberized shelf liner that was about 1/16" thick and laid down pretty nice. We used the white to replace the old black as it matched our fly bridge cushions.
 
The paint I used did not end up working well as it likes to chalk up...it was a marine paint. I did see a boat this fall that had used a crinkle finish paint that I think I am going to used also...it looked to be spray on.
 
Try hydro turf. I put it on my old Montego platform and loved it. Was going to put a grey version on the dash if I kept her.

I have this in the salon of my 3227. I have started peeling it off. I plan to just leave the dash area white..... and call it good. Obviously I am hoping after the ashesive is removed the glass underneath will be in good shape

I have the same issue with my 3257. There is old glue in front of the dash and passenger area. I'm looking for something to recover the rather large amount of area. Painting may be out of the question as the FG has a spider-look to it. I was thinking about using the 3M Carbon Fiber (DiNoc). It looks easy enough to work with and apparently has some UV protection. Has anyone worked with this material?

DiNoc is very easy to work with. Bunch of videos on YouTube on working with it around corners, etc.

Just remember, any flaws in the base material will show like a sore thumb. so you have to fill/sand to make it perfectly flat.

And use only 3M DiNoc; there's lots of copycats out there.
 
The kids apply it to their car hoods and roofs. As did my kid.

He had it up here in Michigan snow, rain, sleet, ice, sun, etc, for at least two years and still looked like new.

I'm applying where the ugly black stripe is on my Carver Mariner this winter. Going to use it for the reg numbers as well.
