Replacing Cabin Carpet in 3257

Well, once again, I ask more questions than I help answer! Anyway, the carpet downstairs is dated, dirty, and could use replacement. It appears that I will need to pull some things out to be able to pull up the carpet and re-install. Will I have to remove the galley cabinets to get to the carpet? Is this doable or what is really not designed with replacement in mind? I would consider cutting the carpet out but securing it without tucking it under cabinets looks difficult. Has anyone done this?

Are you sure it is tucked under and not just hooked to a tack strip???
 
I'm sure Bruce is right. I can't imagine any boat builder putting in cabinets or anything for that matter after putting in the carpet.
Carpeting is usually one of the last, if not the last thing done.
 
I'm not sure about the galley cabinets, but I do know that my carpet runs under the dinette benches, as well as the small lounge seat to the left of the galley cabs... If done properly, these would have to be removed, based on the way mine is done, in my op.
 
Thanks, Guys...I'll see if I can pull this up a little and check it out. If the carpet does not go under the galley cabinets, I think this could be doable for me. The bench adjacent to the galley cabinet as well as the dinette furniture can probably be removed with screws. Surely, like some have said, they would not have placed bulkheads over carpet and I should be able to find tack strips. Does this need to be marine carpet or just good indoor carpet?

Actually...I know there's no carpet under bulkheads in mine.
I don't think there's tackless strips either, I think you'll find it's glued down.
 
Thanks, Guys - I'll get down there this weekend to take a closer look. I'm hoping the benches and dinette area won't be too complicated...glue in the other places may make sense. I'll let you know. On a side note, I'm contracting for the canvas to get done!

I replaced the carpet in our 355 a year ago. The carpet is glued down and was not under anything inside the cabin except the base of the dinette table). It had a load of staples around all the hatch boards and also had some staples around the edges (even where glued) on areas that were plywood flooring. No staples obviously in sections where glued over fiberglass.

I bought bulk carpet off the roll at Home Depot. Only mistake was that I failed to consider how the carpet would react when bent around the hatch boards. It looks OK but if I was going to do it again I'd get a more dense pattern to better hide the folds. That said -- what I have looks so much better and I'm happy with the job.

Also remember when sizing the carpet buy about 1/2 as much more than you think you need. Since the carpet wraps the hatch boards (if your model has them, it take a bit extra to handle the inch of wrapping you'll need for each board edge.

Get good gloves.....padded will help -- especially if you are using a hand stapler to put the carpet back on hatch boards....I used about 800 staples all told -- sore hands were evident (and the blisters)!

Not a hard job, tedious but makes a huge difference. Good luck.
 
Great ideas. I'll be out there tomorrow (Friday) and will see what furniture would have to be remove and just how the it will look.
