I need to replace the head in my boat. Basically, how do I do this with the minimal amount of mess as possible?

It's a Jabsco 37010 and I will be replacing it with the same unit.

It has a sea water intake in and a single waste line out off the macerator base.

How do I clear the lines of all waste before I disconnect the lines? The run to the waste tank is probably 15 ft or so.... so I just running the pump with the sea water intake is going to clear the bowl, but not necessarily the waste lines in their entirety, correct?

That's the problem, I'm replacing it because I can only run it 4 seconds before the circuit pops.

Sounds like you have a bad pump or undersized wire feeding the macerator pump. 4 seconds of run time I assume you mean the macerator not the head? On the other hand I have seen breakers go bad they don't last forever.

Assuming that the waste lines run downhill from the head, there's no need to clear them of all waste. Just flush the head a couple times before you start. If the smell bothers you, stuff a rag in the hose.
 
Rick, might I suggest having a look at the Raritan SeaEra conversion kit?

It has the exact same mounting bolt pattern as your Jabsco, the bowl from your Jabsco will fit on it, and it is a good deal more "substantial" than the Jabsco. I think you'll like it better than the Jabsco...

It comes with everything you need to mount the Jabsco ceramic bowl onto it, and it also includes an inline strainer for the raw water pump and a new pushbutton switch.

Hi all.

OK what I did was remove the old head... not a lot of fun because my waste tank, which sits in the bow of the boat is actually slightly higher than the head itself. The result was when the waste line was removed from the head, some back flow occurred. Nothing too bad though because I had flushed the head repeatedly with fresh tap water so to be sure any waste was pushed through.

Anyway, the new Jabsco head came and the bowl was shattered in a million pieces. So, while they refunded my money, I picked up another Jabsco from BoatFix... but this Jabsco is a full size head.. not the compact one. I installed and it works great.... albeit it is very loud.

So now I have a new unused Jabsco macerator and pump and bowl base that UPS doesn't want even though they refunded my money... Ebay here I come!

I think a winter project will be to put a Y with a manual select ball valve in the feed to the head so I can have raw water continue to feed it as it does now OR, with the throw of the ball valve, have the feed come from a fresh water storage tank, which I will add. When we are out in the sound the water is clear and clean, but at the marina, it picks up mud and silt and looks awful. Plus, fresh water feed will eliminate any odor of decaying marine life in the feed line.

Hiya Rick,
Good to hear of your success and I concur that a fresh water flush WILL minimise odour generation (of the sea-water variety) BUT I would suggest a separate fresh water tank isolated from your drinking/washing supply tank. Cross contamination is possible if you draw your "flush" water from the same source as your potable water. Just my $.02...
