Reserve your slip for next season?

Pete, when they are a town owned facility that doesn't pay taxes, they have a huge advantage. But, for the same reason, they don't have to turn a profit to stay in business.

I'm really focusing on the larger boats Pete since that's what effects me directly. Haverstraw has raised their rates from $102 to $106 in the past few years. The winter storage rates have also gone up roughly 30%. I pay more to winter in the water than most other marinas in the area charge for on land storage. You might also notice that the number of boats wintering in the water is WAY down! So if you raise rates 30% but the volume is down 50% you're still down overall.

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Haverstraw. I've wintered there for the past 5 years and even spent a summer there as well. We are having a hypothetical discussion here. From conversations I have had with a number of other boaters if the cost increase was not so steep a good number would give up the shallow water in a NY minute.

Are you saying that Haverstraw Marina is owned and oeprated by the town? I can't picture the Town of Haverstraw running a place with an image like that.

MJK

If I'm not mistaken, Haverstraw owns the place but leases the operations out.

Talking to some people in the marina buisness I have heard that the slips dont make a large profit. There are alot of expenses that go with owning a marina. Not all marinas use electric meters and dont charge for its use. They also dont charge water usage. These are all bills that have to be paid as well as other expences. Some examples include insurance, Lease fees, dock maintenance, morgage, taxes and all those great expences that go with running a buisness.

Penny bridge has also kept there slip fees the same for either 3 or 4 years now. Whats nice at PBM is they dont make your boat bigger than it really is.

I dont know if they would keep Haverstraw full but everyone there would be happy with there service and Im sure would stay there.

Butch, I thought our plan was for the PBM crew to take over Minesceongo!

Haverstraw is owned by the town and leased out on a long term basis to a groupe of individuals, who I am sure are in it to make a profit.

I would much rather stick to that plan, the smaller marina does have a nicer atmosphere about it. You get to know everyone in the marina and end up with a family type atmosphere. It shocks me how some people are in the same marina and never met. How many times have RO's here posted and found out fellow RO's are in there marina.

Pete, was just wondering????? Hows the weather down there?

Leigh, since you don't stay at PBM, you are not allowed to talk about it.

Touche....

BUT I did buy a boat from them and they are the only mechanics I use... so that's gotta count for something right..?

Butch, It was a rather cool 58 degrees today, as compared to yesterdays 72. I even had to put on a sweatshirt by late afternoon. Tonight it is forcast to go into the high 30's.

I'll take it for mid December.

Pete, I feel so sorry for you. We're getting a real blast of global warming up here.

Butch remeber, it's not how big or small the marina is that makes it family oriented, it's having other boaters actually use their boats and talk to one another. If it was not for your dock group, your marina is pretty empty as was ours. There were not to many boater around this year if you recall. Bad weather and bad economy.

Yes it was a quiet year compared to others, but we still had large turnouts. For our rendezvous we where able to get 21 boats to go on a weekend trip. Not many marinas can get that kind of turnout, and it was our 1st time trying it...

Not many places can accommodate 22 boats or were you all on a hook/s?

This is true, That was a nice turnout. Cudo's for PB for organizing it. I guess Giggity was the only one that did not get an invite but showed anyway.... oh that's another thread.. sorry... LOL Only kidding.

Dave, Catskill.

It really is amazing, especially when you realize that SPBM didn't have 22 boats leave the dock all summer!

Some of us SPBM's would go out even in less than perfect weather. The Admiral and I had several nice weekends on the hook with total peace and quiet. (Nothing wrong with raftups but sometimes a solo trip really recharges your batteries!)
