Rubbing Compound Residue

I wet sanded several area's on my 1985 Trawler with 1200 and 2000 grit sandpaper. After buffing with rubbing compound I find a red residue that I can't remove. Even going back over the area withcompund and keeping it wet, the residue won't wash off.
