I found an interesting solution last week to a nagging problem, leaking rudder shaft logs. ours are located in a very difficult space to access so tightening them is a real PITA. with some age and corrosion where the shaft meets the packing the problem becomes worse as the movement of the shaft wants to remove the smooth face of the packing. Tides Marine has a drop in preplacement called a Type J rudder bearing. it replaces the larger packing nut with a dripless lip seal as many of us already have on the prop shaft. same seal and it resolves the issue of adjusting the gland nuts/lock nuts in a really tough spot to reach.

Yes I agree stuffing boxes are a pain. I last replaced my stuffing last year. Boat stayed in the water this past winter. I guess I have achieved perfection as they barely leak but I panic as I think more water should be coming in. I will look into this.

if you have a traditional stuffing box rather than a rubber gland, in theory the stuffing should leak slightly to keep it lubricated.
Agree with Bruce, Rudder stuffing boxes should be dry and you can adjust to get to that point without danger of scoring the shaft. They don't turn fast like prop shafts and generate heat, so they don't need water to lubricate.
