Runaway Jet Ski & not much crap out there!

So my usual crane guy grabs our jet ski on the jet port for it two days ago from our backyard and lowers it into the water. Next thing I know, we get a call from multiple neighbors that our jet ski is floating northbound up our canal, on the jet port still shrink wrapped!

Race home from work. See that the whole package is wedged in between a neighbor's boat and floating dock cause the tide was coming in, not going out. If it was going out my jet ski and jet port for sure would have been floating out into the Great South Bay.

Quick call to Boat US. Captain shows up minutes later, grabs the jet port and ski, tows them back to my floating dock as neighbors watch and poof... the season has started!

Gotta love great neighbors and the speed/ professionalism of Boat US!

I can only have imagined what would have happened if the tide was going the other way, outbound, and my ski/ port wind up in the Bay for somebody else to claim!

Gotta love living on the water and having enough toys!
 
Ooops! Forgot to say that the Boat US captain told me he as not seem much of anything dangerous out there. Said the Amity Cut is wide open as usual and he has just been picking up loose, simple trash (water bottles, plastic pieces and such) from the bay and channels.

Told me not to worry about launching Saturday and had a big smile on my face. Figured I'd share that with all.

I boat out of Massapequa and the Boat US captain was more than helpful educating me about the local channels and such being clear so far. He said he had been out all winter too. Did I mention I'm smiling?!!
 
Which Captain was it? The guy with the bushy moustache? If so, he is a pretty nice guy. I think I remember him saying that he goes south for the winters though.
 
Nope. It wasn't that guy. It was the thin guy with the beard. His name is Brian too. Really nice guy and knowledgable. Said he has been all over from Bayshore west to the Jones Inlet and said the channels were clear. Just picking up a lot of garbage but nothing structurally obstructive of late. Did say it was really bad in the 4-8 weeks after Sandy. Better now.
 
I still think there is stuff hidden under water we don't see and unless you have a deep draft won't hit it either. That is my concern. Coast guard or towns should be out there wide side scan sonar looking.

I think you're right. So far I haven't heard of anyone getting their lines caught on anything while fishing in the Bay, but you never know.
 
My marina is still missing 2 garbage dumpsters. That would be terrible to hit at low tide!
 
Probably just as bad to hit them at high tide also, lol :-). Sorry, the devil made me do it :).

When I got a call at work that my Formula just gave birth to a jet ski, I didn't know it was your jet ski. Your jet ski is not the only thing that has floated down to my end of the canal. Based upon how much timber I have collected so far, I considering opening up a lumber yard. More 2x6s 6-8ft long have accumulated by me this season, than have accumulated in the last 10 seasons in total, so I would still be very cautious out there.

I was down at the Marina today checking out my slip, and there was a fridge laying on its side..

That would have ruined my day if I had hit that..

I saw at least one anchorage dumpster in my marina after sandy. Most things on land got pushed further inland and were left there after the tidal surge. I had a 40 ft formula and a carver sedan bridge from the anchorage right behind my boat in my car parking spot after sandy. Somehow, they missed my boat which was in the water for the storm.
 
I've been out 3 times in the fall after Sandy and 3 times now this spring after launch. So far I really have not seen any unusual debris out there. Actually I've seen nothing besides a couple twigs. I haven't ventured too far so can't say that's going to be the case everywhere but things seem almost surprisingly normal. I actually have to keep reminding myself to keep an extra close eye on the water because I'm thinking there's going to be more things floating around than usual but running around between Lindenhurst and Bay Shore the past couple weekends I haven't spotted a thing. I'm still going to be extra careful but I have my fingers crossed that there's not as much out there as a lot of us expected.
 
Crane guy is Bob from South Bay. He's a good guy. Been using him for years with zero issues.

Joe... thanks for tying the ski up and letting it get some rest there! We have seen a ton of stuff go down the canal. Sorry it all has wound up by you. I agree. Gonna be slow going out there, especially at the start of the season. Although I do really trust the Boat US captains who say it is not that bad... yet.
 
South Bay guys are the best! If you see Bob and Scott tell them the girls from Jackson Place say "hi"! They hauled our boat every year when we lived in Massapequa
