Can I use an RV toilet. Alot cheaper and they both dump into a tank. I think an RV toilet might use less water also.

You probably could, IF the toilet is located directly over the tank as in most RV's; my guess is some houseboats do exactly that. However in most boats the tank is located somewhere else and the waste has to be PUMPED to it. RV toilets don't have a pump.

First thing when it comes to heads and cheap they don't fit in the same paragraph. If you want a low flow toilet look on E-Bay for a Vacu Flush system they are new and on there at least once a month. I am changing mine out to the new Raritan Vortex Vacflush freshwater model. I am doing so for 2 reasons lets just say my wife craps golf balls and the head doesn't like them sometimes. The 2nd main reason is I am adding a Hold N Treat Raritan PuraSan system for use outside NDZs. The system will fit where my old Vacuum generator was. We are right on the border of a NDZ but boat outside of it most of the time. I am tird of going to another marina for a pump out or wasting the gas for a 3 mile out trip to dump the tank and then 3 plus miles back in. Our inlet is shoaled and requires local knowledge or you can get in trouble real fast especially with a medium sized boat.
Stick with boat products when it comes to boats because they really need to be USCG approved.

If you shop around, the Jabsco manual head can be bought for $130.00 or so. As far as boats go, that's pretty "cheap". I figure 1.3 "boat units".

Of course, that's a head, not a complete sanitation system. The OP is going to need a holding tank, a seacock, a deck pumpout fitting, a vent fitting, and several feet of various sized sanitation hose at a minimum.

The OP might be better off with a porta pottie if "cheap" is the main consideration.

Designing and installing a marine sanitation system is not a simple task if it is to be done correctly.

I have a manual head system. Was just thinking of upgrading to an electric head. Thanks for the replys.

Manual is dependable, reliable and inexpensive to maintain. The newer quieter electric are very expensive. Vacuflush is expensive compared to manual.

IMHO, The only advantage to Vacuflush is fresh water flush. An easy workaround is a <$50 fix should you desire to not deal with the raw water smell in a head.

What the hell is that about? Wow!

What Stmbwle said many times over. On an RV everything just drops. Without a combination of movement, to slosh things around, & chemicals to help the breakup, over time a cone of shyte forms on the bottom. A nevery nasty problem to deal with.

Stick with what is intended for a boat. Nothing wrong with a hand pump one.

Lets just say there is a whole thread about it here! She is so PO'ed at me about it. But really they are as hard as golf balls and the same size as marine plumbing hoses. The only way my properly installed Vacu-Flush would accept them and not clog was to add about a half gallon of scalding hot water and let it sit for about 10 minutes (what a great smelling stew) then flush followed up by a quart of boiling hot water on the 2nd flush. Everyone else who uses the Vacu-Flush on my boat never had a single problem. It has to be the medications she is on. Vic's latest head has a chopper in it that will take care of the problem (hopefully). Now I am going to be in deeper sh*t! I will report the results next Spring when we launch, avec the new head!

One of these ought to take care of the problem:

Just remember not to use it for food or drinks afterwards!

You -do- realize that everytime you bring it up, you are digging the hole deeper and deeper.

Hmm, while we're at it, does your pool table fit in the doghouse? ;)

I know Bill you're right but I think its funny my wife doesn't! I can always move on to the boat and move South. I would really want my wife with me though. LOL Bill

If she's that much of a problem maybe you need a new one???

27 years and still going strong. She has been sick for a few years I would never leave her. Bill

27 years? You must like her a little bit. Ya, the manual has been dependable. I just think too much.

At one time I thought of a manual less parts and no real electronics to break. But my boat has so much in the way of electronics and electronic controls I have grown to trust the various systems. Merry Christmas all from Bill & Jan
