A friend of mine has sailed his boat from Milwaukee, through the Erie Canal, down the east coast to Miami. He is planning on heading to the Bahamas in the coming week. He is planning on spending most of his time visiting different islands however periodically needs a place that he is easily able to fly out of and come back to WI for meetings. Can anybody suggest a safe place in the Bahamas with air transport on the island to leave his boat either in or out of the water for a few weeks at a time? He has a 36' Benetau sailboat with a 5' draft.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Abacos? Exumas? We need a little more information about where in the Bahamas he'll be staying. If it's the Abacos, he'll be in better shape. Marsh Harbour is the first place that comes to mind. There's a few marinas to choose from and there's an airport. I've never flow into the Bahamas as I've always gone over in the boat. But I believe he'll have to take a puddle-jumper to FL and then catch a larger commercial flight to WI.

Thanks Kurt.

He doesn't really have an overall plan. He may meet me in the exumas for a day or 2 in April but overall he is pretty much open to any suggestions. I think the biggest thing for him is that he has a reasonably priced safe place to keep his boat.

Exumas, Georgetown. On a mooring back in "the cleaning hole" on Stocking Island. I believe there is a marina that will haul out as well.

Eleuthera, Spanish Wells

Abacos, lots of places in Marsh Harbour as well as on some of the other barrier islands.

Nassau, has a number of spots. As well as good air service of course.

Great harbour cay in the northern berrys. Marina has reasonable rates and in a true huricane hole

Abaco Yacht Sevices (AYS) on Green Turtle Cay on Black Sound has a mobile boat lift. I think it is a 50 ton Travel Lift. The Other Shore Club just across from AYS has cheap docks, a Bar, restaurant, showers and rooms. There is also Boat Harbour marina near Treasure Cay that is protected but expensive if you are on a budget. Just North of there is another haulout with dry storage. The Airport is on Great Abaco Island and is only a short early morning Ferry ride.

Elbow Cay has moorings to store boats in White Sound Harbour. It is a large hurricane hole. On Exuma they have a hurricane hole but just docks at Sandals that was Four Seasons Resort. The Cleaning Hole that has the best hurricane protection is on Stocking Island but is usually full and in big demand. Another haulout is George Town Shipyard seven miles south of George Town but I do not recommend it as their jack stands are made from old hanger roof supports that are flimsy.

The next best place going south is Provodentiales, Turks and Caicos Islands and is a good yard.

Both Marsh Harbour and Treasure Cay have airports
I fly into Treasure and stay at Treasure Cay Marina
I have very good contacts there if you would want a recommendation
