How do you all with smaller boats flush your engines? Anyone have experience with the VolvoPenta neutra salt permanent system?

My small cruiser has a fresh water flush feature that allows me to hook a hose to an inlet on the transom and run the engines while flushing. Since my boat stays in a wet slip this works great for me.

You can purchase the fresh water flush kits for cheap.

I do not have experience with the Neutra-Salt system but there is a lot of discussions about the system on the site.

I too have the flush outs on my transom on the 2960. The direction I was given was to NOT run engines when flushing. That make sense to me as this methoid flushed out the block with fresh water and not drawing in salt water with intake while running.

Hi, I used the same method for my outboard Yamaha after boating on salt water as I now do for winterizing the engine (Yanmar 200HP diesel), without any problem. When the 2665 is on shore I connect the Mercury Bravo III on a can with antifreeze and a tube, start the engine and the antifreeze will come into the cooling system. It is the same way as it works with sweet water after boating on salt water. Succes!

You might be correct. I don't want to hi-jack BBDAWG's thread but the flush instructions I received were to run the engines in the water for about 5 minutes to insure that the thermostats are open, then turn off the engines, connect the fresh water hose to the transom inlets, turn on the hose and start the engines and run for about 5-10 minutes with the fresh water running, then turn off the engines and then turn off the fresh water. This is the method I have been using for 18 months.

I do know that if you leave the caps off of the transom fresh water inlets, that NO water gets into the engine. I learned that the hard way when I left the dock one day without replacing the caps. I traveled about 1000 yards when the engine over-heat alarms sounded.

If you learn anything else about the fresh water flush procedure, please let me know.

Hey guys, no problem on hi-jacking!! I'm very interested in the discussion and ideas from everyone. I do want to comment on the running vs non-running the engines during flushing. If you warm the engine first (Opens the thermostat) and then shut the engine down and flush - the thermostat instantly closes so the cool fresh water is being blocked or significantly restricted. The Neutra-salt system instructions say to run the neutra-salt infusion while the engine is warm and running, for about 45 seconds.. To me that makes sense and the entire engine interior is treated. jmo (as I have a single Volvo Penta V8 - I don't see much difference between my engine and yours, except most of you have double the problem and I do trailer my boatas well..

Your instructions follow the ones that I had received. The thermostat being open allows the fresh water to run thru the entire engine.

The fresh water transom flush system that I and Bracati2960 have are designed to stop the intake of raw water as soon as the transom fitting are opened. By keeping the engines running the thermostat stays open and the fresh water flushes the entire engine.

Most interesting input on engine flushing. It appears that the engines must be running to keep thermostats open - I didn't think about that. shutting off the engine and then the water should finish off the flush. Time for me to update my process the next time I visit the bay.

Thanks guys
