I have written several times before and have recieved some good information on San Pablo Bay but we are headed across there this weekend and I have one more question. At high tide can you cross that bay anywhere to get to the Petaluma River or do you still need to watch your charts and depths very closely?

Well, it depends on your draft and how high the tide is. Clearly, anyplace that is still wet at MLLW will have 5 feet of water over it when the tide is 5 feet. I generally stick with the established areas, though, because you never really know what sort of wreck, log, misplaced buoy, or whatever may have washed into shallow water on the last high tide and now be submerged and waiting for you this time around....

I'd stick with the tried and true. Also winds may be a factor still this weekend.

Have a great trip. We look forward to your report next week! Maybe some pictures?????

If you are travelling out of the Carquinez Straits bound for The Petaluma River entrance and you have cleared the end of the rock wall (Dike 12), I would not head strait for the 1st entrance buoy. I would not cut away from the marked channel until you clear markers 9-10. Once you get to the Petaluma River Markers...STAY IN THE CHANNEL. Those marker are there for a very good reason and get more important as you get further along. One good thing about going through there at low tide is the education you get when you see the mud flats and if you go aground you have an incoming tide to help.

Thanks All,

If you hapened to be on San Pablo Bay on Sat or Sunday and see a 24ft Bayliner listing to one side in the mud, stop by and brings us a drink.

High tide in a 24'er really won't have any problems. Once you get past the rockwall at the Napa river, take a rough heading to the pump house( guessing 245*) and you'll be close to the entrance bouys for the Petaluma river.

Check on the wind. SP Bay can get nasty.

I've cut the corner from the deep channel to the Petaluma channel a little. As your scope goes from 40' to 6', you start paying attention.

Hey Monterey10,

I see your home port is Capitola. We spend a month there every summer and I tie my boat off to one of Ed's cans for the month and chase salmon every year. Do you fish out of there?

If you see deltabighat stuck on the flats, just remember this.. What happens in San Pablo Bay stays in San Pablo Bay.
And be careful of those pesky mussels

Yes, I live 2 blocks up from the pier. I used to launch an aluminum boat off the davit. This year, I have a 21'er. I plan to tie off in the mooring field. I'll be fishing Salmon on Thurs/Fridays this year. Craig

Craig,

I was in Capitola last summer when the sailboat burned up. Whatever did they do with that wreck? Someone was supposed to salvage it but not much happened when we were there.
