Vic, my Sea Era is about 4 years old and has recently given me some minor problems. Seems the selenoid is not always opening which I believe is a connection problem. Until I can troubleshoot we simply pour some water into the bowl and then flush. However, it sometimes spits up and out of the bowl. Is there a maintainence issue I should address or is it related to the water problem.

Sounds like there may be something stuck in the joker valve.

The vent is clear but Tim may have the answer. I don't think there is anything stuck in the joker but the valve might need replacing. The problem is sporatic and only when we must pour water into the bowl.

Try swapping out the joker valve, Raritan part # C254. That phenomenum is usually caused by a partial clog or restriction somewhere in the discharge line. It doesn't have anything to do with the solenoid valve operating erratically; that's something different.

Thanks Vic I will give it shot when we return to home port and I will also ensure there is no partial clog.

I have the same problem with my Sea Era.....flush it and some "stuff" spits up at you from the toilet drain - and I installed my Sea Era this past off season. So I need to replace the joke valve already?

Not necessarily, Russ. If the holding tank vent line is partially clogged, it can cause it to spit back. Or, if the toilet is wired backwards, with the positive and negative wires reversed, it will definitely cause that to happen (pressurized fresh water flushing units only - discharge pump will run backwards - it will still pump, but just not as well, and it'll spit back at you). But changing the joker valve should be done each year, or at least every other year, as part of the spring commissioning of the head. In your case, it shouldn't be necessary just yet, but it's something to keep in mind for the future.

Thanks for the input Vic! The head didn't do it at the beginning of the season so I'm wondering if maybe I have that "fluke" joker valve that wore out a little early? Vent seems to be OK as I haven't had a problem during pump out.

Russ, one of my servicing dealers called me the other day with the same problem - SeaEra spitting back at him. Upon taking things apart, he found a "white mouse" caught in the macerator. Upon removal of the item, the head worked fine. Any shot of that having happened, in your situation? My daughter-in-law, who knows better, clogged up the Atlantes marine toilet that I have in my basement by doing the same thing... Took me a while to clear it out >

Hi Vic,
No one on my boat needs/uses a "white mouse". Love that term. LOL

I'll check it out again this weekend to see if the problem still persists.
