I need an additional seawater intake for my merc 350 mag/bravo3. I am checking out the Forespar Marelon 1 1/2" flanged seacock then to a seawater stainer and reduce to a 1 1/4" hose to my seawater pump Y.I can't find a "scoop" strainer thru hull from Forespar to screw into the 1 1/2" seacock, just a mushroom thruhull to thread into the seacock. Will I get enough flow on step without the scoop and is Marelon ok for engine compartment area? Does a seacock have to have flanges to bolt thru to be safe or can you use a ball valve and thru hull with backing plate which is what my head looks like it has?

I don't like plastic or nylon below the waterline. My suggestion would be either stainless steel or bronze, see following link:

The Perko with the scoop strainer (facing forward) would likely be best.

As far as to whether or not you'll get enough water, I really can't say - it depends on the configuration of the hull and if the water rushing by creates a vacuum at the through-hull.

i agree... i woudln't use anythign but bronze under the water line even though in all fairness marelon is a good plastic and acceptable.

and make sure you only use bronze, do not use any brass fittings as they will corrode much faster and may sink the boat !

Thanks for the input. I'm going with the bronze with scoop but do I need the flanged style with bolts thru the seacock and hull or is that overkill for this application?

Finally finished the extra intake project. The flange on the seacock seems to be a more stable system. I used the bronze seacock and strainer in 1 1/4" but may have gone to 1 1/2" or 1 1/4" full flow if I had known what was up with the different ID. The epoxied backing plate really helps reinforce the seacock. I clothed over the plate and epoxied the bronze flange bolts into the plate. Used 5200 sealant to seal the scoop thru hull. Thanks for the feed back. tight lines, Clydo
