Hi,

I'm new to this forum but was told to post here from the "other" SeaRay forum.

I'm considering a SeaRay 340 and Regal 3760 both with V drives. Any feedback regarding both boats and dealers (experience) is appreciated. I'm a SeaRay owner with a 2005 260 and 185, so the Regal is new to me. Local dealers are Marine Max and Quality Boats in Clearwater Florida.

You need to take them both out for test drives.Then weigh the different layouts.Both good boats.But I like the regal layout,handling.The Searay has better lines.Then read the forum and see what if any complaints or trends are out their.

I owned a 03 34 . I loved the boat. Never had a motor related issue. Minor warrty stuff all delivery stuff.... Boat handled snot very well.... We upgraded for more room. otherwise id still have her.

I've seen both boats a couple times, although the 3760 Regal was an I/O. I was impressed by the Regal considering I'm a SeaRay owner, didn't expect this. Many little things that are not big but collectivly add up. The engine bay was impressive on the Regal although it's an 8.1L Volvo I/O so maybe the V drive version won't seem as roomy and well laid out. Anyway thanks for any help.

The 34 Sea Ray Dancer is one of Sea Ray's most popular cruiser style boat. It has huge interior space with its 12' beam. The boat's profile is better than any of the other manufactures that are out there I guess that why Sea Ray has 38% of all the registered boats in that class in that particular area. I belive regal is less than 8% of registered boats. This is important b/c when you are ready to move up or move on, there is a buyer ready to purchase your boat.

Regal uses alot of Volvo power plants. Mercury is the prefered engine, make sure it is a Merc. under the engine hatch.

just because there's more out there, doesn't make them better, and there's nothing wrong with Volvo power

I dont know a mechanic that prefers to work on a volvo motor over a merc. Service is an issue !

I know this will sound like sarcasm, but for people who charge by the hour, Mercs are the way to go.

Last winter my neighbor leaned over while I was pulling my Merc water pumps. He said, "hey, that should only take 10 minutes". (a Crusader owner) If I had had that last bolt out by then, I would've thrown that miserable mess at him.

I've never changed a Volvo impeller, but it LOOKS to be ideal.

NO.........just makes them the boat of choice for that size....... facts are facts.
 
As SLW said in his post, Volvo's are easier to work on (the normal stuff) and the rest is the same as Merc. You probably talk to Merc mechanics who don't like to work on anything other than black engines.
 
DoubleD...let me just say...they have a GREAT marketing team. Plus, in my area the dealer sells them for more than they're worth so the only ones they can trade in on are other Sea Rays. My friend tried to trade his 260 DA in to both us as the SR dealer...wound up telling the SR place "so you charged me too much for my boat!?" and his salesman smiled and said "yep".

Took me almost 8 hours to replace our port side sea water pump. Needless to say I paid the mechanic to replace the starboard side one.

Look at the specs on both at the mfg www, then see if there are any tests out there or check yacht world for sales and going prices.

Pay attention to deadrise v. your normal operating area. IIRC, the 340 has a 19* deadrise, the 3760 has a 17*. All things equal, 19* takes more power to keep on plane than 17*. Regal used to use a stepped hull. They are more fuel efficient than a non stepped hull. The regal bow is entered via a windshield walk through. the Sea Ray has gunwale walks. My personal preference is for the latter. Additionally, if the windshield is used as a hand hold, it will end up cattywhampus in alignment. BTDT on my last Regal. Make sure you can fit in the forward berth. The center line berth is not meant for tall folk. I have tried both Regal and Sea Ray and neither brand fit. The angled birth on both fit well. I'm 6'4".

WRT engine choice, from my mechanic; Volvo's are easier to work on than Merc's and Crusaders are easier to work on than both. From my experience, I/O's are more economical than inboards. Volvo composite drives have solved that as well as mercathode.

Look at the LWL of the hull only, then subtract the ER length. Almost everything else is not livable space. Forward of that is normally an anchor locker, aft is platform. Stand up straight in the cabin. if you hit your head, you will grow to hate it quickly.

Reasons for choice of the my current boat. Cost, gunwale walkways, new engines under 4 year warranty, hardtop, usable interior space and suitability for my cruising areas.

My SR340da is 2* years old, we lived on her for two years,and I still love her. I'm6'6" and I can stand up in the salon/dinette, and almost in the v berth. We don't talk about the after berth :>). Oh, she was repowered in 2003 with Crusaders, an improvement I think.

Yeah, four of us. Yes it was incredibly crowded, but something I had wanted to try for probably 25 years. The two kids were pre-teen, and their biggest gripe was folding down the dinette each night. Other than that, they and I loved it and Mama hated it, mainly cause there wasn't room for all her collections of stuff. We were classified as long term cruisers, since living aboard is prohibited in this county, were in a small marina 50 steps from the beach bar and 100 steps from the beach. Either way iot was close enough to crawl home when the bar closed. When the kids, who are now 16 and 17 leave, I'm going back. I've told the Admiral she's welcome and if she coesn't come along, I'll miss her. Move over dawgs.
 
I do not know the specifics on Sea Ray vs Regal, but I walked out of the Regal dealer's office after the salesman spent 20 minutes on the phone while I was sitting at his desk. He never got off the phone. Having spent much of my career in retailing, I know that the customer right in front of you is more important than the one on the phone. I never went back to the Regal dealer. They may have lost a sale on their 4260 (or whatever they call it)

That's eerie. I experienced the same thing at the boat show this w/e.

Not a directed slam to Regal, that seemed to be the norm.
 
Same thing at our Regal dealer here, but I have to say...that's beeter than the Marine Max "glare" that I get when I go there. At least the Regal guys are on the phone...the MM guys just don't even want to bother. Yes, I do work for their competitor, and most of the sales people may recognize me, but I never resist talking to anyone from another dealer as they may not particularly want their brand and may even want mine.
