Hi Liz,
Yes, I'm back I should have reported. We had a great trip other than the airline losing my luggage on the way down. It had our back up GPS, VHF radio, my Float Coat and other assorted goodies. After a lot of arm twisting, I finally got my bag delivered to the boat at 12:45 am.
We left the next morning on flat glassy calm seas. Our course took us out towards the Two Harbors/ Isthmus area of Catalina Island. I was dying to stop in at Avalon Island, but we had reservations at Oceanside, so we pressed on. There was plenty of wildlife in the water from sea lions to schools of dolphins to keep us entertained. We could smell the smoke in the air from the fires, but didn't see anything burning. I did notice that for as calm as it was, the ocean surface should have been glassier. It had sort of a dull gloss to it and we finally deduced that it was from a fine layer of ash floating on the surface. We had hoped to re-fuel in Oceanside, but as we made our way, the gauges were dropping rapidly. I suggested a stop in Dana Point to re-fuel and the skipper agreed. I was at the helm as we headed there and the needles kept dropping so I slowed to displacement speed. When we arrived there, the fuel gauges indicated almost empty tanks, but when we filled them, we discovered that we had about a 100 gallons in reserve. We topped them off and continued on to Oceanside Harbor. Before we arrived, Tom called them to check on our pre-paid reservations. The lady said that we would be arriving after hours and that they had inadvertently sent too much money for the reservation. IT was agreed that we would dock just below the Jolly Roger Restaurant and she could keep the change. We had cocktails and a great dinner at the Jolly Roger to celebrate the first days voyage on Tom's new boat.
The next morning, we departed at 0700 to just slightly rougher seas. Our goal was to be docked prior to 2:00pm so that we could check with the Mexican officials and have the rest of the weekends to ourselves. There was a fair amount of radio chatter between US warships and private boaters being warned to change their course and/or get of their way. I hoped and prayed that we would find ourselves in the path of one of the warships so that I cold lay claim to being hailed and warned by a US WARSHIP but the closest we got was a freighter off of Point Loma. We had a great trip down the coast and were docked by 1:30pm. Tom's son and I washed the boat down while he went into town to clear us thru immigration. By 4:00pm we were enjoying margaritas overlooking the harbor. Our wives joined us a little later and we had a great weekend eating and drinking at local eateries.
On Sunday afternoon, we hopped a flight back home after another great trip on the Big Pond
Bill, it was nice talking to you and I looik forward to meeting you in person!
