Discovery Channel's hit show 'Dirty Jobs' will
feature the Coast Guard Cutter ASPEN January 29, 2008 at 9 p.m., please check your local listing for exact times. The episode is currently listed as Episode 3 on Discovery's website. We are also pursuing additional Coast Guard episodes with the show's producers.

Tune in as ASPEN's crew puts Mike Rowe and his film crew through shootin' the tube, critter scrapin' and the heat-and-beat. The episode was filmed in the San Francisco Bay area just before Thanksgiving.

When I went to set a reminder on my DVR, I found that the CG story is on my cable company's system tomorrow night. This may not be true for all northern CA though.
 
Watching it right now (commercial break). Barnicles are NASTY!
 
I saw it at 6 PM our time this evening. Those were some big nasty barnacles.

Discovery Channel on DirecTV: the same episode runs again tonight at 10, pacific time.

Bob, that bouy you saw on the program was well out of the Bay and in ocean water. I'm located in the central Delta (north of the bay) where it's fresh water in the winter and slightly brackish during the summer. The boat is in the water all year long but the fouling problems are mostly with algae. The waterborn critters are very small and not much of an issue on my boat.

We have a very big yearly raft-up and barbeque those critters.

I don't understand why the CG doesn't bottom paint the submerged part of those buoys! Does anyone have a clue?

A few years ago I took the opportunity of taking part in a SF Bay cruise on one of those Buoy Tenders with the Auxiliary. We cruised for about two hours while enjoying a light lunch. The boat was all cleaned up and not a barnacle to be seen! They left a buoy at the dock which had been cleaned up and refurbished, but a NASA buoy was on deck ready to be redeployed. The weather was warm and beautiful. My friends and I had a great time!

No cable/sat. Can I see the program at discovery.com??? we got a few rod an gun members that work for corp of engineers that go around picking up all the broken up pilings and trees that are floating in the bay.
 
I have no idea if it is on the internet, but it is worth your checking it out. More and more TV programs are also being "broadcast" on websites!

They are painted with anti fouling. But there is no anti fouling made that will keep an object clean in a marine environment for the 6 year tour of duty that these buoys do.
 
fstbttms, thanks for the info. In the program they said it had been two years since it had been cleaned. Maybe they only bottom paint every six years.........
