I know that in the old days you could go to Shell Island, anchor your boat, and consume a berverage of choice as long as you were either in the water or on your boat. Recently they have posted signs that clearly state no alcohol. If you go there now can you even have alcohol on your boat? I do enjoy having a few beers, but I certainly do not want to break the law or get arrested. Any comments?

Thank you!

I only know the secondhand information....No alcohol on the beach, in the water, OR on the boat. My source said if it was in the cabin, it was OK. Nothing allowed on deck, even in a cooler. I will be making a phone call this week to find out for sure what the regulations are.

I alternate between Shell Key north and south (Bunce's Pass). I have seen the Sheriff's patrol boat ticket beach dwellers with the can of beer but as of yet, not anyone sitting in their boats. I'll be very interested in what Ken finds out about alcohol in and on the boat. Times like these, I'm glad all I drink is water when out on the boat.

No alcohol in the boat?
No Ray in Shell Island.

Ken,

I would appreciate you finding out what you can regarding the restrictions. I would assume that if you want to have a cold beer you would have to have one in the cabin away from the police. I do think that too many people at shell drank way too much in the past, but not being able to have a beer or two is ridiculous in my opinion.

Thank you!

you have to wonder about all the restrictions appearing right at the time that development started on the island east of shell island. The owner of Billy’s restaurant is building residences. I suspect hundreds of boaters partying in the back yard would not have been a selling point.

Bruce, I was thinking the same thing. I cruised by the place yesterday and did not see any progress with construction.

I still have not gotten a solid answer. Lots of hearsay, varying opinions, but nothing firm. Maybe we should send Bruce down with beer and see what the results are.

A friend of a friend works for wildlife and fisheries, waiting to talk to him now.
