She's Baaaackkkk!!!

So good to know you are ok. I sure hope they not only HAVE a handle on your problems, but make sure the keep track of it.

Exercise is good, but you have to be able to do it first. I hope you found some people who got you started on the right path. My brother in law was diagnosed at around age 40 and he did ok for a few years, then he got worse because his metabolism changed, if I understood it correctly .... so back to a new doctor and he is doing well again. Scary stuff that diabetes.

Take care of yourself....Dave

Flutterby - glad to hear you're doing well.

A year ago, my father in law had diabetes, gout, was overweight and was an alcoholic. Something happened (family, not medical) one day to kind of give him a wake-up call. He quit drinking and started going to AA, and also got on a diet from Weight Watchers. Since then he's lost, oh, about 120 lbs, and no longer has any trouble with diabetes and gout. Honestly it's amazing to see the difference in him. The Weight Watchers system is where they ship you a box of food, it's sort of like tv dinners, but healthy, and he says they taste good too. I believe it costs him around $300 a month for this, which sounds extreme, but when you think about it just about all his food is coming from there, so he's spending almost nothing at the grocery store. If you're concerned about your weight or diabetes, I would recommend looking into it.

Nice to see you posting again. Glad you're back and taking care of yourself.

Lia, it's great to have you back aboard!

Glad to hear you are well. We missed you.

Gee, I quit drinking in '91 and since have developed Diabetes. Seem kinda bass-ackward, huh.

I may not do much fishing this year so if you need some mechanical stuff done just email me.

Sounds like fishing will be pretty lousy this year.......so sad!

Charlie, you have email......

Welcome back. My mom is a diabetic, she was diagnosed a couple of years ago. She watches her food intake and has really gotten control of it. You can do it too.

Glad to know everything is ok now and you're back with us...

Liz, you got mail.

How's the striper fishing? Little early?:(

I have no idea. Haven't been using my boat for about 3 months.....[:-blindfold]

One female black lab +100 lbs, one male black lab +100 lbs [brother and sister] and one male Maltese 10 lbs. It is the Maltese which goes boating with me. The labs protect my house and property while I'm gone and do one heck of a great job!!!!!

Liz,

I thought it was just PC problems. I'm so glad your back, and healthy! God Bless!

There are a lot of boaters out there that know Bill W.

So glad your back, your were dearly missed!

Mitch

(email me when you have time hun...)

Flutter,

I am pre-diabetic - damn all this good food! Over the past 6 months I have modofied my diet, get regular exercise, and my blood sugar is way down. I have basically quit drinking beer, but do some tequilla on the weekend while on the boat - sometimes a bit much tequilla... It turns out that tequilla has no carbs, or so I am told, so I can sort-of rationalize it! All kidding aside, Diabetes is really serious stuff, and after reading on the stories from your well-wishers, I think I am about due for a checkup!

You obviously have a lot of friends here! Nice to meet you!

Jim

Hey, Jim, nice to meet you too! Perhaps our paths will cross somewhere in the Delta one day.....

Tekilla may have no carbs [don't know about that one!], but all alcohol quickly turns to sugar in your blood stream.......[:-spin]

I was prediabetic for quite some time and knew I was pushing my body with the alcohol. But it was my liver that went whacky first! [:-timebm]Ironically, now that I am 75 days sober, my blood sugar has returned to well within normal limits and my diet is not restricted. And w/o the alcohol, my liver functions have also returned to normal. I feel really great, which is a big bonus and keeps me motivated![:-viking]

So, how long have you been boating in the delta? I don't get up to your neck of the delta more than 1-3 times a year, but it is always a lovely trip. The folks at Oxbow Yacht Club are a nice bunch too! Give a holler if/when you plan to bring your boat over Bethel Island way; maybe I can split a soda with you!;)

I was totally taken aback at all the fuss over my absence. I hadn't a clue that anyone even noticed. Then I got back on line and Wham! It just blew me away. [^] Boaters are such wonderful people; that is why I love boating! [:-angel]

Good to have you back. I hear that it's sometimes a big help to replace one habit with another. If drinking is no good for you...There is still kinky sex. A kink in the back, the neck, the sholder...

Great idea!

Let's party.

Flutterby,

Great to see all's well and you've got everything under control. You've got a great bunch of friends here who really care about your well being and are with you in lock-step to provide support and encouragement. You're a lucky lady!

Welcome back. Hope to see you on the delta.

Flutter,
I've never been a heavy drinker, in fact about the only time I drink is on the boat on the weekends - when I am settled in and won't be driving. Life is doing good, and the last thing I need is to screw it up because of drinking! You are right about tequilla - no carbs is just a rationalization - I know its not good...

So glad to hear you are doing well - it's funny how fast a change like not drinking can change how you feel, and how fast your body can recover. I quit smoking my cigars a few months ago, and I feel so much better! I feel so good, it is hard to want to go back, as addicting as nicotine is.

I'm kind of new to the Delta. About 20 years back I had a 36' race boat and came to the Delta a few times, and got lost... It was pre-GPS and the delta can be a bit confusing. I've been through a lot of boats and learned a lot since, and two years back I brought my 27 ft down from Tahoe at the end of the season to see if I would like the delta. It was love at first sight! I boated last year on the 27, almost every weekend, and in Sept boutght a 3270 Bayliner for a little more room. So much of the Delta is slow, so the 3270 is just fine. I have a little SeaDoo Explorer - its a jet ski in the middle of a 14' ridgid bottom inflatable - so when I want to go fast, I can. It's also kind of neat in that I can tow it without worring about bumping into the big boat like a normal jet boat. Anyway, I am down almost every weekend, and usually 4-5 day weekends. I have a Wife and 2 boys, 12 & 14, but I would say over 1/2 the time I am by myself - not everyone is as passionate about boating as me!

It is sure nice to hear from a female who loves the water too! As you have come to see, it's the people that boat that I really enjoy - a good bunch. We will definately have to get together someday - maybe have a get-together with a bunch from this site.

Didn't mean to write a book here...

Jim

Flywright---you are SO correct, I am indeed a lucky lady!!!I did not appreciate how lucky I am until I became sober. Now I am reminded every day in one way or another and that is wonderful. I was flabbergasted when I got my new computer up and running and started reading my emails and then came to this website and read of so many concerns for me. One RO, who happened to be skiing with his family a few hours drive from my home, even offered to drive over here if he could help me!

This website is truly a community even though most of us never meet most of the ROs in person.

Jim, some vices are harder to give up then others; but when your body experiences serious health issues, well it just makes sense to modify our behavior to improve our health. Fortunately for me it has helped tremendously. I feel about 10 yrs younger now!

Well, it took a while for you to finally give the Delta a serious try, but I'm glad you made it! I first came to the Delta in March, 1979. The guy I was dating had recently bought a 28' Bayliner which he kept at Bethel Island. For five years, I spent many weekends on his boat, falling more and more in love----with the Delta and with boating! I finally realized that alas I did not love the guy, so I decided to go on my way and buy my own boat. Boat loans for single women were nonexistent in 1981, so I saved my money for five years and finally in 1986 I bought a brand new 19 ft Bayliner Cuddy. Five years later I moved up to my 22 ft Freedom Cruiser which is what I still boat in. I enjoy the challenge of single handling Flutterby and love meeting all the wonderful people in the Delta!

A couple of times there have been raft ups by folks on this website. Usually more folks say they will be there then who actually show up. That's California for you! There used to be an old Tow Capt named Tom who organized a few of these. He has since passed on and the raft ups seem to have passed on with him.

Hope to see you on the water sometime!

Liz
