Shinecock Canal Locks

I'll be bringing my 260da around from ss3 Lindy to Mattituck in April. I'm told getting through the locks can be really challenging under the right conditions. Any advice for a novice as to the best tide conditions for getting through there. Are the locks manned all the time?...Thanks

Going through the Shinnecock locks when the water is moving is white knuckle experience for your first time. Try either going through just as they open or close or just consider locking through when they are closed. Your boat should have no problem with the current. Ignore the no wake zone and stay on your power to make headway. I'm not saying to stay on plane with the boat, you will make a wake just keeping up with the current. I believe the Locks are manned all the time. If you do decide to lock through have your fenders and lines ready prior to going into the canal. No place to fumble...Do not tie off to any cleats while locked, just loop the line over the cleat and hold off the wall. Lock through once you will see how really easy it is.

If I go through during high tide on the shinecock bay side are the locks open... I'm told that is the best time to go?

Yes...to traverse the locks with being open but the current is still moving...locking through is equally easy. Just don't go through with the current honking and stay to the right...

Bring a few people on your boat and enough fenders (4 to 6), so you can set them up on both sides prior to entering the locks,same with the lines. It will be alot less stressfull if you have everything set up prior to entering the locks, the extra hand or hands will also hope.

I have been through the locks a number of times and maybe I have always been lucky, nothing to worry about.

I think they are closed high tide on bay side.
The locks are designed to control the flow of water from bay to peconic.
Best time is slack on bay and peconic, which is too hard to time.
