Coming to LI in Sept and planning on entering through Shinnicock Inlet to the canal. Anyone do it this year and any advise? Never cut through before.
 
Just went thru a bunch of times this week for a fishing tournament.

Plenty of water but a ripping current can make it rough under the right wind conditions.

Some big boats have issues with depth at low tide in the bay.
 
Yep what mark said . Its well marked .. Just a tad skinny at low tide... Whats ur final destination. Time locks … Its much less stressful to lock tru .. Open gates are not fun IMHO

Open gates ain't bad if heading North.
South, then good luck!
Especially running thru the flood gate which is 20' wide but feels like 14'

Open gates right before they close sucks ASS. the current coming off the west open gate is stupid . People idle into it and its a train wreck. especially when u got a a hole right up ur ass and the guy in front of u is spinning out of control... yea no ty . rather deal with the DB that olny holds onto the side as lock fills and he looses grip...

Yeah, well open you just power thru if noone around.
If there are other's then I admit its not fun.
I would never go thru the open North path in anything smaller than 30' or a single screw.
That is gauranteed mess.
As for the hand-wall holders, I have seen them.
Went thru with my friend with skyhook and we were 1 of 2 boats.
He engaged skyhook and we sat in middle of canal.
No holding on!
Next boat gets skyhook or DPS!
 
Skyhook is an automatic station keeping function available with Zeus pods. Axius is available with Mercruiser IO's. I've seen it in action and it's cool to a different level!
 
Came through Shinnecock last week on a party boat and noticed all large vessels kept to the west side. Coming back in with a south wind waves were breaking in the inlet on the east side.
 
Dps is dynamic positioning system and this is available on Volvo ips.
Big upgrade for me so I have not done it.
It is very cool.
