I have a 1988 2767 Santego w Kohler 4cz Gen. I have looked every where but I can not find the so called shore/gen switch. It's not on the panel and not in the engine bay with the genny that I can see. I have the original owner's manual but no reference to location is made. Is it possible it is set up to automatically switch? I don't want to start the genny and screw something up.

Thanks in advance.

My 1999 carver has an automatic switch from shore power to the generator. I would rather have a switch but I have not had any problems with the set up. When the generator reaches full power the switch automatically engages and you have power. I usually flip my main breakers off when I start the generator. Once it has run for a couple of minutes I flip the breakers and you can hear the automatic switch engage.

I was surprised to find that the last two Carvers my brother had did not have transfer switches either. Makes me feel better to flip a switch to bring the genset online.

I have a 1990 Carver Allegra 3087 and it has the automatic remote transfer switches. They are located behind the 12 volt panel in a seperate electrical box. You can hear them engage with a click when the generator comes online.

and when they dont work, you can tell when your generator starts smoking

willysross, I don't think the genny will start to smoke........just the appliances that are now rec'g 220VAC instead of the 110VAC !

It would depend how the switch failed if it allowed shore power and the genny output to combine you could very well have an explosion and due to out of phase AC power. If it didn't transfer the load your appliances just wouldn't receive any power from the genny or shore power depending on which way it stuck.

I have no 220v on the boat. Everything is 110v. Ok see if this sounds right to do. Going to disconnect from shore power and trip the main breaker off. Start the genny and let it warm up. Trip the breaker on the genny to on to supply power to the panel. Trip the main breaker on the panel to on and see if I have power. If yes woohoo! If not let the trouble shooting begin..lol.

Thanks for all the help guys, a cold one on me if you get to Vegas.

I am picking up my new genny tomorrow. When I was doing general maintenance on my existing one I started it up to check it and forgot to un plug the shore power. heard clicking in the cabin behind the panel went to check it out looked back to see smoke come out of the windings in the generator. I will be going to a manual switch. anyway while I change to new motors I thought might as well change out the Genny. When I get the old one out I will take to the shop and find out if it is worth saving. Either way Ebay here it comes.

One more question from the rookie....

...The 1981 3007 Aft Cabin I am looking at (spring) had an option to have a 6.5kw generator but it is one of the only options it did not originally come with. What kind of investment am I looking at to purchase and have installed? The yard that is brokering the boat said "we could put one in for around $2000" but didn't mention the KW output. This seemed awfully low to me but I know nothing about generators. I will be at the Cleveland Boat Show and was going to ask around but I figured you guys are the best reference possible.

Thanks,

Jim

it sounds REALLY low...reguardless of size. At the show...look me up...I'll be in the Carver display :-)

Ram,

I will do that. Do I just look for the "freakishly tall guy" as you put it?

I work across the highway and will come some time over the week, no idea when though.

Jim

I'll be there every day of the show...ask for Kenny. And, yes...I am the tallest one there...6'5" tall
