Shot at in Bowline

To finish the weekend, I was bbqing at Biwline and five guys are on the shore hanging out and started firing what I am guessing is an air gun towards my boat. Each round hit the water closer and closer to my boat you could see the rounds going into the water. The last one hit less then 50 yards from my boat. Called 911 but by the time the cops got there, they were gone.
 
Too bad we weren't there, I'd have gotten my pellet pistol and and fired a few right at them.
 
This is very disheartening I have enjoyed Bowline for years I'm hoping this was an isolated indecent I don't want to get caught in the crossfire the next time. I'm not sure how I would have handled this but I would like to believe I would have refrained from firing back with the believe it was an air gun however if they were shooting real ammo I think this would call for at least a warning shot! The last thing I want to have to do is explain my actions to 12 antigun nuts. On the other hand I have a gun to keep my family safe but I truly hope to never be forced to use it.

Here's a thought being you have a laser light on board pointing that in their direction may have sent them running! This would have made them think twice about taking another shot without putting you at risk of being arrested or worse! I think the cops were off base on this one!

I'm just glad no one got hurt and there was no damage to your boat!
 
You could be in more trouble over the laser light than they are with the arir gun. Not much more that you could do except call 911. Not sure I would engage in a gin fight with them.

Considering the police seemed to encourage returning fire I would feel more comfortable explaining the laser light. I wouldn't point toward an aircraft but pointing in the direction of someone shooting at me I could justify. The police were called the shooting had not stop waiting for their aim to improve is a crappy option!

And for the record I can out "Gin" most and I would enjoy doing it:)
 
Maybe one of those outdated rounds from the flare gun would have gotten their attention?
 
NY law doesn't support warning shots. That's considered a negligent discharge. The only shot you can take is to stop an immediate deadly threat. Repeat after me:

1. I was in fear for my life.
2. I want that man arrested.
3. I'd like to speak to my attorney.

Also in NJ a pellet pistol is considered and treated the same a real handgun. Dave or Mike don't bring the BB gun to Jersey especially if it's a BB pistol.

Agree and for the record, I did not feel like I was being fired directly at rather idiot kids being idiot kids. If I felt an immediate threat, we would not be discussing this on boaters Ed. The lucky part to this situation is that I interpreted it in this fashion. That is fortunate for everybody because there is a very fine line here that thankfully I did not cross.
 
Thank goodness no one was hurt and you did not have to respond. If you had and the police took you in it would have made a mess of your life.

Bill I don't even own a pellet gun as a kid I had a BB gun I made the mistake of bringing it to NJ and found out the hard way that the laws were different. Let just say I no longer have a BB gun but some cops kid probable enjoyed it for a while:)

No doubt. Even after thinking about it a day later, I still believe they were shooting towards my boat as a joke but certainly cant be sure if they were trying to hit it or just get close.
 
Out dated flare gun, shoot, take them out, throw in water,,,,,,, don't know anything

I'd rather use one that's guaranteed to fire. I'm willing to spend a couple bucks for the entertainment value.
