I AM HAVING A PROBLEM WITH MY BOW THRUSTER. SOMETIMES IT WORKS AND SOMETINES NOT. WHEN IT DOESN'T WORK, I CAN HEAR THE MOTOR SPINNING BUT NOTHING HAPPENS. ALMOST LIKE THE SHEER PIN MAY HAVE BROIKEN. BUT I DON'T THINK IT CAN'T BE THE PIN BECAUSE 75% OF THE TIME IT WORKS JUST FINE. HAS ANYONE ELSE EXPERIENCED THIS ISSUE? THE MOTOR IS ONLY 4 YEARS OLD. IT IS A SE40/125S MADE BY SLEIPNER MOTOR. ANY SUGGESTIONS ?

Sandy, Thanks for your reply. We are thinking on the same lines. I already jumped in. Nothing in the tunnel to cause prop to not work properly. Pulling the motor and checking the pin is my next step but wanted to check with others before doing so.

well it wasn't the pin. Everything looked good. starting to think it could be the gears that operate the propeller which means pulling the boat. For now ill see how it goes over the next couple weeks

Sorry to hear it wasn't just the pin.
I suppose a missing gear tooth could allow it to work intermittently. Did you try turning the prop by hand to see if there is uniform gear resistance and make sure the prop nut is still well-secured? ( Obviously turn off power 1st.)
I don't know what resistance would be expected , but if it suddenly changed as you turn the prop U/W I imagine that would confirm your latest thoughts.

good thought. I did try turning prop last week when I jumped in the water. It turned freely but I didn't do a full turn or pay attention to the resistance. I guess I try that next. Thanks

P. 24 of the installation manual has trouble-shooting suggestions that mention the shear pin but also advises the shear pin is in a flexible coupling that must be properly engaged to the vertical driveshaft. It also mentions checking the propeller fasteners and the key in the propshaft keyway.

(Click on Files at the right & download the manual if you don't have it with you.

"If the electromotor runs but there is no thrust, check:

-If the flexible coupling between the motor and driveshaft is
not fitted correct inside the boat. *
-Are the propellers in the tunnel fastened correctly on the
prop-shaft (key/drive pin present) **
-With the motor removed, turn the driveshaft from inside
the boat to feel if the gears are engaging and turning the
prop-shaft. ***

Solutions :

*Check the flexible coupling/shear pin and the motor installation to ensure correct connection of the flexible coupling before re-fitting the electromotor.
**Re-fasten or replace the propeller and/or key/drive pin.
***In case of a failure inside the gearhouse, we advice (sic) to get a replacement gear-house
instead of attempting to repear (sic)the internal gear and bearing system. "

Hope it is something simple.
