with that said as JOhn C posted ... u have to be very carful . Never follow a smaller boater as u never know what short cuts they may take. Always Navagate for urself.

I have hit stuff with IPS boats, and believe me...they are not as delicate as you all think. I slammed into a telephone pole, partially submerged at 30 MPH in a 42 flybridge...cut the pole in half lengthwise and only bent the props on the one drive...no drives falling off, no disablement. I have to believe that a similar occurance in an inboard boat would have done similar if not more damage. Shafts, props, rudders, struts...none of those are that hearty either people.

do you know what a set of props cost for the IPS?
 
they are expensive, but are repairable also. Yes, we've had to reprop an IPS already

To answer your question, No 45' feet is not to big for the channels. Having a 4' draw IMHO, aint so great for the south shore but is doable, you just need to pay attention, no room for error.The good thing is the south shore is a soft bottom.

I am kinda on the fence about Volvo IPS, I know all the benifits but it does not have a history yet (repair, problems, maintenence, longevity, etc). Tough call.

Don't know what the warrenty is on them but I would highly reccomend you get an extended warranty through Volvo.

As far as the Doral and the Alegria, It is one beautiful boat, if you decide to get one post pictures.

I want to thank everyone for their comments and help on this. There is alot that is going on with me and my boating situation. I won't get into it because it is a very long story and it is hard to explain but suffice it to say, I have not yet been on the 36 sea ray and it is likely that I never will. Personal reasons prevent me from doing so.

I was not spamming. I am very very hopeful of eventually purchasing this Doral and while I know my situation sounds like i might have been trolling or wasting people's time, I can assure all of you that I was not.

People are protective of this forum and I understand that. My situation, without going into details, is a tad unusual but my interest is genuine, and to be honest, my questions and your answers may have helped someone else who was on the fence about IPS drives and Doral boats.

So that being said, thank you for your help and defense and I understand your apprehensiveness......no hard feelings at all.

A friend has a 40’ Formula with IPS and has not had any problems that he has mentioned.

For me forward facing props just is strange, but I know the technology has been around on majors vessels for a long time.

If I were to switch drive propulsion, the Mercruiser Zeus or maybe their newest the Axius would be in my future. However, my next dream boat would be a larger Tiara Sovran and they now come with IPS not Zeus. I did say “dream” boat… not likely in the near future.
 
I'm trying to find out what SeaTow's policy is on un grounding boats with the IPS drives. The national meetings are going on this week so hopefully I'll have an answer in a few days.

Alan, we're not that protective around here, maybe just a little rough around the edges...it is the dead of winter.

You're welcome here and please do not hesitate to ask any questions that you may have. We have a diverse group here and usually someone will chime in with some good information.
