Cruising at night can be fantastic, but it does scare me sometimes and I don't do it very often.
I returned to my dock from over by the Amityville/Massapequa border at about 11:00 PM Friday night.
There was a full moon and the bay was like glass. Visibility was as good as it gets out there.
I came back at a nice easy pace, but saw several others running up on plane. One with no lights on at all, and a second with just an anchor light on.
The first guy I heard coming and saw the water ahead of me moving before I saw him coming at me from the east. The second guy I saw sooner because of the anchor light, but wasn't sure what it was until he got closer to me.
It was still a real nice ride though.
You always have to watch out for the other guy when out there, but even more so at night. The risk of crossing paths with someone who has been drinking too much probably increases a bit when it gets dark.
I myself do enjoy a cocktail or two on the boat, but as hard as it is to hold off at a gathering, I do wait until I'm safely tied up for the night to indulge.
