South Shore Raft-Up?

Andy,
What does your boat draw? If you come in the FI inlet you will have plenty of water and the channels are well marked. The JI inlet may be ok, it has been a long time since I have used that inlet. RobSki, could help you with that inlet.

I little less than 4 feet
 
I think going through FI inlet is an easier trip. They are supposed to be dredging JI this winter, but if that doesn't happened shoaling there has made the main channel in the inlet very narrow and subject to rough conditions. Except maybe for the turn by Captree, getting into FI inlet and the state channel is not too bad. I draw a little over 4' and don't have problems.

Another consideration is that if you come from Jones Inlet, you need to get under the Wantagh Parkway bridges. You will need a bridge opening at Goose Creek, and that bridge is not always manned. I've had to drift around for 20 minutes or more waiting for the bridge operator to drive over from the Meadowbrook bridge when I had my previous boat with the tuna tower. I was just looking at the Hudson raftup pictures and unless your arch folds your radar won't make it without an opening. My boat just barely gets through and I have to be careful to go right through the center of the opening.

There is deep water in both coves and they are a nice place to drop the hook for the night.

You are an excited boater…. that is great! Now everyone has their own schedules according to many factors. In my boating circle, Raft-ups usually begin to occur mid to late June and end….., well when we get tired of it. One of the many fun parts of a raft-up is hopping in the water and frankly when it is cold is no fun.

For the last few years, our group have been at marinas on opening days or before :--) and taken advantaged of many of the local dockage on Fire Island before the crowds. Watch Hill, Atlantique, Kismet, Ocean Beach Etc. are great mid April-mid June. Once the schools let out and there are more family’s boating it gets harder to get into the marinas. At that point we do our longer planed trips and raft-ups. Don’t get me wrong, you still can get into marinas on FI, but need to get there Thursday or early Friday and the bigger boat you have, the harder it is.

Oh yes, forgot to mention, we do the same late season when, most boaters are retired for the season.
