South shore vs North shore

I'm looking to move from the north shore ( huntington) to the south shore (lindenhurst). I know there are more places to go ( fire island/reasturants) are there also coves where you can just anchor and swim to the beach/island ? How are all of the sand bars east of lindenhust. Can you also stay in the great south bay and go to places like greenport ? Thanks. Just tring to decide if we should move.
 
SOUTH SHORE IS THE BEST !!!!

Check Daves LIBI (sticky) post at the top of this folder.......it lists some of the anchorage coves in the Great South Bay and some marinas on F/I. There are ALOT more.

East of Lindenhurst is fine (as long as you stay between the cans). Its WEST of Amityville where it gets a bit skinny.

I was a North Shore boater for a number of years and moved to South Shore.
They both have their pluses and minues but I prefer the South Shore.
Reasons:

North Shore
North Shore has limited placed to go on Long Island.
You can go to CT but there is not as many places as the South Shore.
Very little challenge for boaters except rocks. Don't have to worry about channels (this is a plus I guess).
Beaches are rocky.
Limited dock space and limited fuel stops.
Deep, Deep Water.
Good fishing.

South Shore:
Lots of restaurants to go to. Fire Island is great.
Lots of marinas like Watch Hill to go to.
Access to ocean.
Lots of coves.
Very challenging boating. Must know your channels and watch your depth.
Plenty of dock space available at marinas and private homes.
Plenty of fuel stops and stores on water.
Smaller tidal drop than North Shore.
Very few if any rocks.
More boats to hang out with.
More Scenic boating.

I am sure I will catch some flack from the North Shore boaters, so I will just add that this is my opinion after having boated on both shores for a number of years. I didn't say anything about the calmness of the water, but the North Shore tends to be calmer with our south winds, where as the bay will get a very snotty chop sometimes because it is so shallow. This does not bother you if you have a decent sized boat.

One thing you did not comment on was boat traffic. Care to give an assessment of weekend traffic/congestion in the channels? I've heard it can be like the expressway during rush hour.

Also, how many times a season do you go into the ocean?

As Dave said They both have their pluses and minus’
But those may change for each person, what kind of boat they have and the boating they do.
Dave made a good list so I will give my .02 on some of those items

North Shore

This is a very BIG plus – Yep the NS has Rocks all over the place- BUT the rocks seem to stay in their place all the time– As far as the channels on the SS, as Mark said, they are known to be like the LIE.
The channel are major bottle necks at the end of Sunday or during a shift in weather and all the bad boaters show themselves
Not that we don’t have bad boaters on the NS, we have plenty, but we have more options to stay the He!! Away from them if needed
Beaches are rocky.
Yes compared to the SS where almost all the beaches are sand there are less NS Beaches that are nice sand-

Limited dock space and limited fuel stops.
Yes the NS has very limited dock space- it keeps the number of boaters down ;-)
I don’t think there is a issue with availability of fuel on the NS/Ct- The SS may have more fuel docks and the distance to get most anywhere is short (maybe not short in time because of the ‘channels’) compared to the NS –
Plus I think the SS needs more fuel docks because they have more boaters

Deep, Deep Water.-
Good fishing. agreed the NS has great deep water and fishing – but I understand the SS has great fishing as well

South Shore:
Lots of restaurants to go to. Fire Island is great.
I agree to both- Not that the NS/Ct doesn’t have restaurants to go to by boat it just may take longer to get there – I’m also based out of huntington and slow cruise at about 22kts and can get to well over a dozen restaurants in less than a hour- some of them in 20 min- for some it’s the boat ride anyway


Lots of marinas like Watch Hill to go to.
Access to ocean.
Lots of coves.
I have never been to watch hill- but everyone says it’s great
If you’re a fisherman being able to get to the ocean that fast must be great!
It would take you 80-100 miles to get to the ocean from huntington

Agreed – not that the NS/Ct is a piece of cake- the SS has unique issues

Not sure I agree with this- yes there seems to be many more boats on the SS- but you can see some major raft-ups all over the NS/Ct
And as far as Scenic boating- this is purely a matter of personal opinion
The SS is absolutely beautiful- I prefer the ability to see much more contrast by making use of a body of water that is multiples in size

My response to Dave was a little tongue in cheek.

Seriously, I agree with your assessment/comparison that it is all a matter of preference. What is "better" for one may not be for another. I agree with alot of Dave's assessment of the South Shore pluses which is one reason why we would consider it. Having grown up on the South Shore and boated there with my Dad, I agree that Fire Island is a huge plus.

My only concern for myself has always been boat congestion. As it is, I get annoyed when some yahoo anchors too close to me. Especially when there is plenty of room to avoid it. Knowing myself, I don't know if I would be able to get used to it in anchorages that are regularly crowded.
 
marcgin.....Where in Lindenhurst are you considering ?...commerical or private?

They too have their pluses and minuses.
 
And the south shore has less snobby Yacht Clubs… I hear the Anchorage YC is a great place and great deal because you can buy a slip and own it for life.

Just Google…. LI South Shore Yacht Clubs…

I wouldn't know- most NS boaters I know slum it at marinas not YC
 
South Shore has some congestion on holiday weekends but most of the time it's not bad. Marinas will fill up fast and some coves can get crowded too. The channels themselves can also get congested if you have alot of people fishing or moving slower than you.

I do not go out in ocean much, that is more a plus for other people who fish.

It is really 2 different types of boating and alot depends on what type of boat you have and what you like to do. If I had a boat with a vary large draft, I would probably prefer North Shore. For Sailboats North Shore is probably better too, since you can go anywhere. North Shore water also is cleaner though last few years South Shore water has been pretty darn good!
 
I do both south shore and north shore.... I like them both.

I like being able to make a reservation ( north Shore )

I like being aboe to find a cove and veg ( south shore )

I think the people ( north and south shore ) are all great people as long as it pretains to boating .....

Take away the boat thing and north shore people are for sure aholes !!!

I have a one word response that all that have boated on the NS and SS will agree, the SS has many more of these and IMO makes the SS more scenic.

The South shore has Walter, you can make up your own mind as to whether that is a plus or a minus...
 
Actually the best boday of water on the Island is the Peconic. Treasure Cove is not a bad place to keep your boat if you don't mind driving far to get to it. I think the Peconic is the best area with tons of places to go, coves, and good access to North and South and Ocean.
 
Are you talking about the old guys with man boobs and the gold chains who drive the go-fast boats?
I wonder about you guys!

Yup..... I've been there before........It is a VERY nice place. Pricey but nice.

So..... how do you like the South Shore ????
