Stiff Throttles

I have a 2000 2760 with Volvo 4.3 GLs (carbs) and the throttles are stiff going from into neutral and into reverse and when trying to add throttle to reverse. If I push in the bypass buttons the throttles are smooth and easy to move.
Any Ideas?
Thanks

Greg

Greg, if the throttle is smooth when you disengage the gear selection (ie the button in the lever) then its likely the throttle cables are ok and its the cable going to the gear selection. Its possible the gear cable is stuck or more likely the gear is having trouble to engage (ie gear damage)

I remember on the old forum someone had posted pics of the gears behind the panel in the leg. My boats out of the water so I recently unscrewed the cover on the front of the leg, in there you can see the linkages going to the gear lever, if you could disconnect one of the pins you could check if its still stiff, that would eliminate a gears issue (do so without running the engine)

Greg,

Your shift cables are probably corroded down by the out drives. I had the same problem with my 5.O's. Your boat is old enough to have developed bad cables. I bought new cables and installed them. No more problems. Buy the cables from BoatFix. They have good prices.

If you can, do what Ajay describes. There is a plastic cover on the front of the upper unit of the Volvo SX drive that removes easily with 3 bolts - it's not sealed. Under that you will see the gear shift cable connection. Remove the cotter pin holding that onto the outdrive's shift linkage and try shifting at the helm. That will prove whether the stiffness is in the cable or the outdrive.

I have the same issue on my 2000 Volvo 4.3GL/SX combos. I have about 110hrs on both engines. Shifting is stiff on both of my drives. It was not the cables. The outdrives are stiff. Although my drives are stiff, they do shift reliably and quietly so I've decided it's not worth opening up the upper unit at this time. Make sure the linkages are well lubricated with a water proof grease and there is no obvious binding in the externally visable mechanism.
