Still Pond House - Updated 11/20/08

We are actually a bit high on the cost/sq foot due to the radiant heat, highend windows, hardwood floors, tankless HWH. Right now we're at about $184/sq ft.
 
Good choice of technologies and options, though!

We'll be at SJC Saturday night if you're in the area....

Beautiful setting; we anchored outside on Still Pond last Wednesday night after our run from Cape May. Put it on the "come back here!" list for next year. I'll have to put a star next to the entry, signifying nearby RO to mooch from! (or have mooch off us if need be)..

I have never seen OSB used on a roof, always plywood.
 
osb good for roof, used around here 20 yrs plus
 
The roof is nearly 12" thick SIPs, 2 sheets of 3/4 OSB sandwiching 10" of styrofoam. Is about a R-42 at 25 deg. There is also a partial wrap-around porch yet to be added to the front of the house.

I asked because 15 years ago when I built my house hear in NY, OSB on the roof was a no no. The advantge to OSB over plywood was the termite factor, so the sheathing of my house was OSB. I was told (15 years ago) that the only problem with OSB is if it gets wet it is like a sponge, that is why they use plywood on the roof.

That was 15 years ago, there will be a day soon that I will build another house, that was the reason for the question. Also in NY we do poured foundations, not block, what are our thoughts on that?

Like plywood, I believe that OSB can be rated for use indoors or out depending on what is used as the b Ouonding agent. Our footings are poured concrete but the rest of the foundation is cement block. I'm not clear on the advantages of poured concrete over concrete block for a foundation but I do know that block is a lot less expensive to build with. Our current house is 32 years old and has a block foundation with no issues to speak of.

foundation poured or cmu a matter of preference or local custom. for the purposes if a house no difference. on larger footprint, taller structures there is differences.

7/16" OSB is used for roof decking here in north GA/Atlanta area almost exclusively. Only place will regularly see plywood is in commercial construction.
 
I was told that OSB is better than plywood as far as termites are concerned, is that still true?

Unless termites start eating the glue that used to bond the strands I would suspect they won't be an issue.
