FYI -- A story in Recordnet.com/localnews says the Waterfront Marina in Stockton has been completed except for finishing touches and will be open Oct. 30 with about
60 slips an about 60 feet of guest docks.

Wow. Just in time for the non-boating season. With the bunch of municipal numbskulls in Stockton that have done everything possible to discourage boating, I don't doubt that they will look at expenses and receipts for the marina next March and decide that it isn't a worthwhile endeavor and close it.....

After all, what should have been a simple dock replacement took what, 10 years?

Who's going to manage it? Somebody told me that Phil Acosta was interested in running it, but I haven't heard who got the contract.
 
That place always amazed me - it had such potential - such a great downtown area - but nothing ever seemed to come of it. It will be interesting to see what happens, and I do hope they get their shi# together and make it work because it would be so nice to have a classy downtown place to boat to!
 
I was cruising the Delta a few weeks ago and took some pictures of the new Stockton marina.
It's very impressive.

Jim, I agree with you!!! My BF and I used to cruise to the Stockton waterfront about once a month for dinner dancing and dock lounging back in the 90s. Great memories!

Those "covered slips" are such a joke! The slip is rarely protected from the sun and rain; never protected from wind and dust. Those sheets may have a nice visual effect, but they are totally ineffective for boat protection. Yet I am sure they will charge "covered slip" prices for the slips.......

Stockton seems to bumble everything they do IMHO.
 
Traditional covered slips weren't an option. There are plans to eventually build office space and condos on the land adjacent to the docks, and the city would have never gotten permission to build something that blocked the view of the water like boat sheds (and that frankly are an eyesore to non-boaters). I thought it was a good compromise personally. You get a decent amount of shade compared to the none you would have gotten with open slips, which were the only other viable option.
 
I think its pretty nice myself, but it doesn't take much to impress me. I may boat in and have dinner and a drink and then float across and take in a game at the stadium.

That location is just cursed. I've lost count of the number of restaurants that have come and gone. The article also mentioned that Westric Marinas will be managing the facility once (if?) it opens.
 
Thanks for posting that Stockton marina piece. I "never" miss Mike's column but that one on got by me on Wednesday. However, info on the marina should not be coming from a clumnidt initially. When info is news it should break in the news sections. It is incredible that the marina delays escaped scrutiny by the Record for 11 years. The city also let the old marina rot away from neglect. It was a great place when constructed by Eckhard Scmidt, the pedophile wh fled toEurope to escape the law. (Shades of Polanki.) I enjoyed many cruises to that marina. -- Warren
 
The sheets (I refuse to call them "sails") over these docks are indeed ridiculous. If the idea was in fact to reduce visual impact for unbuilt (and unlikely) nearby buildings, then open docks would have worked much better. The material in these sheets will decay over time and require replacement or, more likely, removal. The heavy steel posts and suspension arrangement has added needless weight to the docks and the docks will also suffer needless additional wind strain because of these huge drag machines.

One more project chosen by people who should be selling perfume, fancy watches, and tailored suits instead of making important municipal choices. Score one for the victory of fashion over function!

The endless delays, as reported in the Stockton Record article linked to above, smack of only one thing: bureaucrats and politicos holding out until the right palm gets greased. What needs to happen here is a good fed sting operation aimed at putting corrupt public employees in jail.

BTG - as I pointed out a few months ago, a similar setup has been used for many (8?) years now over the nearby stage on Weber Point and they appear to be holding up just fine. I'd much prefer the significant amount of shade the fabric provides than the none that an open slip provides. A local developer (Grupe) has an option to build residential units "behind" the docks, and had a condo project in the works before the real estate market imploded. I'm not expecting to see construction start in the near future, but once the market demand is there again, Grupe does not operate at the speed of city government.
 
The place looks beautifull! Very classy and empty - be interesting to see what the slips go for. I think the sails are really nice looking, will probably last for may years, and certainly give some shade. Hopefully they set them so that a heavy rain does not dump onto a boat - right, they wouldn't do that...

I'm looking forward to spending a weekend there, and helping the local enonomy! Lets do boaters-ed cruise-out there next spring and we can all see it, that is if it's open by then!

Guest docking near the ball club is already open to the public. I stayed there overnight July 5th. Very first class. I guess they are free of charge---at least I didn't pay anything and I saw no signs mentioning fees, etc. Security could be a problem, but I didn't experience anything.

The sheets, probably made from a Sunbrella-like material, float at a slant, so water will drain off, but could fall directly into a boat depending on the wind direction. There is only about an hour a day that the boats will be in full shade.
 
I read that Westrec (a subsidiary of Public Storage and operator of King Island Resort and Tower Park Marina) got the contract for the Stockton Waterfront Marina. == Warren
 
At least they are experienced and have a good track record in the Delta. Time will tell........
 
I seem to recall seeing some sort of drainage pipes coming down from the covers. I also thought they looked real nice.
 
I didn't notice any drainage pipes; I agree they look very nice! I just doubt their functionality....
 
I'm pretty sure I saw drainage pipes as well. They do provide a significant amount of shade. I've been by them many times, at various times of the day, and it isn't 100% coverage like a shed, but it is far better than an open slip, especially if you're in the middle of the dock.
