Folks,

The 3rd annual Diamond Classic Sturgeon Catch & Release Derby was a complete success.

The following is my personal perspective, as one of 5 of the chase boats (weigh masters).

Steve Talmage, arguable the most well respected charter captain, pulled off another class Derby, ran by class folks, and attended by by class fisherman. As kids, and proper ediquete was the theme of this event. Radio traffic was polite (minus just a just a few), and everyone was very professional and polite

264 paid entrants, landed 18 legal size slot size sturgeon, entered in the money drawing. 100% of the monies were returned to the fisherpeople, and all fish were released unharmed.

Not to mention the many fish caught by the kids section, who entered for free, whith each receiving a special package just for entering the Derby, plus and any fish caught by the youngsters were entered in to an additional special drawing just for them.

Here are some pics from the event:

Nice looking fish. When my wife first saw a sturgeon and I said they are in the Delta, she won't go swimming anymore!! I did get here to go in last summer but she still asked about the sturgeon. I just told her that they were all down in the bay at this time of year. It seemed to work.

Tell her they are bottom feeders who do not come to the surface and prefer deep water.......

That's what I have told her but she still thinks they are ugly and prehistoric. It's fun to give her a hard time!!

You can tell her they stay on the bottom, but its not true. I have been out fishing and seen them come up straight out of the water. I have talked with a few people, and the say its a way to clean the parisites off them. Not sure if that is true, but I had one come up about 30 feet from the boat before, and it will get your attention. But if she ever asks me I will tell here they stay on the bottom too.

They ARE Prehistoric BUT they don't have teeth. They sometimes purr when you rub their stomach.

Have her take a close look at one sometime. Their SOOOO ugly, they're cute.

...And many are caught in very shallow water, like 3' or so...

They are prehastoric, no bones, only cartilage...

(pardon the spelling?)

Anyone know how to clean one? I have heard about cutting them a certain way and pulling the cartlage out.

Most just filet them, and don't hassle with the cord. It does waste some meat, but what you get is all primo meat...

I searched the internet, for you, and found this to be the method most use (fastest, easiest, best product):

Thanks Mitch,,,That sure looks like an easier way of cleaning them. Now all I have to do is catch one. It sure would have been a nice weekend to fish this weekend, but had to many other things to do.
