I received a copy of this email. I have not verified the following information:

Greetings Marty Gingras <mgingrasrb2@gr5tdfg.ca.gov>,

I wanted to inquire as to whether or not the Ca DFG were aware of the dumping of dredged spoils in prime sturgeon waters near Pittsburg, during a period when many fish are holding in that area? Barges containing spoils are being dumped in the Sacramento river by Lt 31/33, Jap Point and near Pittsburg. Spoils are being dumped on well known sturgeon holes, in addition to known clam beds. How can this happen? Is this legal?

This is definitely NOT slurry, but solid clay & mud. The people that have observed this have many years on these local waters, several are charter captains. Info from a Bar Pilot confirmed this material is spoils from Federal dredging.

Many folks have reported that this process has tremendously increased the turbidity for quite a distance from the barges. There has been a long stretch of muddied water from Pittsburg to the Carquinez Bridge. When several of these sport & Charter boats have scanned the area afterwards trying to mark sturgeon, there are virtually none present. Everyone that I have talked to thus far (VTS, ACE, DFG & CG) have admitted they know it is harming the fishery.

Is the Ca DFG aware of this action? Can you tell me what its position is? This has to be harming the fishery…how are they able to do this?

This has been reported to the CG, CDFG, ACE & VTS with absolutely no response yet. They all claimed the material is only "slurry". But it is NOT slurry…it is clay & mud.

Any help or info you might have regarding this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Marty,
Mitch Harper

Have you sent this to Coastside?

They have become, locally, the most powerful advocates for the fishermen.

Mitch is a member of Coastside. I'm sure he has it covered. He knew I would post the info here!

Not really, but that's fine...

More people are getting involved now, including Marty Gingras of the DFG, and the Fed EPA.

I'll post follow-ups. Thanks!
