We had a good cruise up to Suisun City Marina this weekend. We launched at Vieira's Friday afternoon. Took a short cruise up river just burning fuel and take in the delta landscape. Went back down to Rio Vista, had dinner at Fosters. Stayed overnight in one of Vieira's cabins and left Sat morning. Before we even got close to Antioch, we ran into bad fog and had to go back, crossed under the three mile bridge and went back around on the SJ and by the time we got to the Antioch Bridge, it had cleared up. An easy trip to the Mothball Fleet with the exception of a pleasant encounter with the sheriff's boat who informed us we were too close to the restricted shipping lanes. They were very cool and we kept north of the green channel markers the rest of the way. The cruise up Suisun Slough was very pretty, had good water beneath us almost all the way. We overnighted at the marina and had a good dinner at the Athenian restuarant. We left the next morning at near low tide and still had decent water under us all the way back to the bay. I would recommend this cruise to anyone wanting to see a little different area of the delta.

Glad to here you had a good trip. I was just thinking of new places to cruise this coming summer and Suisun City crossed my mind. I think it will be on the to do list now. Thanks

I have friends who lived in Suisun back in the 90s. We used to launch their bowrider at the Suisun Marina and cruise all around the sloughs and out to the mothball fleet and as far as Pittsburg. Great area for boating - especially the Suisun sloughs. The renovated area of Suisun at the marina was pretty nice too thought haven't been there in a while.

It sounds like you had a very nice cruise.
How close get you get to the Mothball Fleet and how deep is the water in that general area?

Cutoff slough is a fun ride. very narrow and winding.

Arnold,

We weaved in and out and around all the boats in the fleet. They post a sign that says do not come closer than 500 ft but even at that, you get a marvelous look at those old war vessels. In fact, for all of you that have not done it, take a cruise and see the USS Iowa, the great battleship. It is enourmous and has a storied history. The water depth all around and on both sides of the ships was 25-30 ft deep even at low tide. Good fun trip to see those old grey ghosts.

Thanks for the trip report, DBH. Sounds like a great way to enjoy a weekend. Was the ride out of Susuin at low tide sufficiend for a boat with a 3.5 ft draft?

DBH, can you confirm that your sheriff's encounter was near the former Naval Weapons Station Concord? It now has a new name, but I don't recall it. When they have ships loading/unloading there, they generally re-route recreational traffic through a side channel farther away from the wharves....

Bay Trawler,

Our contact with the sheriffs boat was while we were heading west, in the marked channel, about four to five miles west of Pittsburg. I am not sure where the naval station is. They were good guys and we were clearly on the wrong side of the markers.

Kalan,

Low tide that day at Suisun was at 8:14. We left the marina at about nine and had at least 6 feet of water under us at all times, in the middle of the channel, and in many places along the way it was over 20 ft. What I was told was that on the day we left the low tide was not a big low so I don't know if that helps or not. Great trip though

DBH,

Yes, I think that was the old CNWS area. Normally, you want to stay in the channel (south of the green markers for the E-W portion from Carquinez to Antioch) but that channel is "restricted" when ships are docked at the old CNWS. They have marked a side channel with much smaller, temporary buoys in the past, but I don't know if they still do that.

The shipping channel in San Pablo bay is also "restricted", but that restriction is for navigation purposes, not security purposes. Otherwise, I prefer to stay between the buoys....

DBH Glad to hear your cruising weekend was a success! I've made the trip to Suisun City 3-4 times, but it has been several years since the last trip. A couple of times we spent the night on the hook in Montezuma Slu. Very beautiful and quiet with no wake problems.

I do recommend anyone going to Suisun make sure they have enough fuel. Fuel is available at Pittsburgh or Antioch and at Suisun, but no where in between!

Thanks for the info, DBH. I'd like to make the run up there sometime with the admiral.

I think the Naval Weapons Station you're referring to is Port Chicago. Here's a link to an interesting summary of its role ans some history. http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/facility/concord.htm

As a side note, the Roseville train yard mentioned in the article is a couple miles from my house. The town I live in is named Antelope, after the old mail stop in the area that was obliterated in the munitions train explosion. A few years back, they discovered live bombs buried under the yard during railyard expansion. Some were exploded on site since they were considered too unstable to transport. After debris started raining down on area rooftops, they began transporting the ordinance to Susanville for detonation. (Sorry for the hijack)
