We are heading out on our boat tomorrow, and was thinking about heading over to Croton. I have a 5 and 7 year old that love to go swimming. Is it safe to let them in the water? My son likes to spit water at everyone, and I am concerned with him actually ingesting some.

One of my bad experiences on the Hudson around 1994, was water skiing, wiping out and forcefully swallowing about a billion gallons of water. The next day I was deathly ill with a Virus that the doctor could not specifically track down where it was from. It took me about 2 weeks to fully recover.

Thanks

We, Jake the insane Border Collie and I, swim almost every weekend in Croton. Never gotten sick. I'd be more concern with the several knot current you can get over there. Keep a very close eye on the little ones.

Several cities take their water from the Hudson. For example Port Ewen and Poughkeepsie. Given all the boaters that use the river every time I have a cool glass of water I like to think this Bud's for me. But yes, I have swam, skied and boated the river for 20 years and have never had any ill affects. If anything the river has gotten cleaner.

king,
They have a community beach over in Croton, if it was not safe to swim I'm sure the beach would be closed down.

Well we're back, and we had a blast. My 5 Yr. old Daughter was in and out of the water more than I could count. My son on the other hand didn't feel that well, and the baby, well she'll get used to it. All in all it was a good day,the only bad part, is the sunburn on the back of my neck!

Thanks for the input, I'll be seeing you out there soon.

King,
Sorry Im late with this post but under no circumstances go in the water...

Ok, only kidding, the local beach tests the water several times a week, if you see the beach is closed it would be wise to stay out, but then there are usually warnings on 100.7 telling of a sewage spill....The water has really cleanerd up, We spend alot of time in the water. Glad you enjoyed the day, also thats a good looking boat you have there....

I too was hesitant at first so I made some phone calls. Apparently Westchester county health department monitors the water at Croton Point Park as well as the beaches on LI Sound. They assured me the water was very safe. Since I've been swimming in the Hudson with my kids (past seven years), they never got sick from the water. I do restrict them from drinking though, especially since there is some salt. The town pool however...it seemed to be a 50/50 shot that they would get strep, an ear infection or coxsakie. I'll take the river over a public pool any day. Too many people in a concentrated area for me.

I and my family have been swimming there for ten years now. No adverse side affects have been detected other than a few extra Budweisers...

Didn't Kramer swim the Hudson on Seinfeld? There were no ill effects on him, that I could see.

Wrong river, he was in the East River

LOL - that's great publicity, isn't it???

As for us, we swim in the Rondout Creek every single weekend. Just not on Sunday nights ;)...

But we wait until Tues. or Wed. for all their mascerator pump outs to clear out of the creek.. Rumor has it one should not swim in the creek on Sunday evening or Monday... :D

River seems exceptionally clean this year. I took what seemed like a gallon in each end [:0] over the weekend while skiing around Kingston. No ill effects so far.

LOL, actually the geese do more damage to water quality than do the boats up there...
