Ticks at Watch Hill ?

I was wondering if anybody else experienced ticks at Watch Hill? I was there Saturday on my friends boat with my young nephew. He came home loaded with ticks. He had to have 7 to 8 ticks on him. I can't be positive but he was fine before we went to Watch Hill. We went to a BBQ at a friends house after we returned. My wife noticed the ticks when he came out of our friends pool. We checked all the other kids at the BBQ and they were fine. I'm lead to blame the ticks being at Watch Hill.
 
I heard the same while at WH this past Saturday. A boat owner next to mine was plucking a couple off their dog. I did not see any as others did and said they were out in the open. Ticks mostly hide in grass / brush not out on walkways as I was told. So who knows. At least they were not the little deer ticks which carry Lyme disease. What dock were you on ? I was on B-land.
 
A few weeks ago at the Sea Ray Getaway......a few dogs got ticks.

It may also have to do with the mild winter.
 
Was at the SeaRay getaway and pulled about 5 or 6 off my dog after a walk to Davis Park. They are all dog ticks, did not see any deer ticks. I pulled them off before they bit, though one did bite and got pulled off a day later. It's not just WH. I was walking my dog by my house and he got one on him, it must of been the winter or that time of year. Not much you can do.
 
You guys use Frontline on your dogs? Seems to work.

I was there over the Memorial Day holiday and not only was the dog covered with ticks (10 to 12 per day) but so were the kids. When I told the women in the store I felt they already knew but didn't say so. The ticks were so bad we decided to leave Saturday afternoon. I docked on the West side and the kids just went to the beach and played on the dock, no dunes or playing in the sand and they still were loaded with ticks.
 
How do you tell a dog tick from a deer tick?

Dog tick is the size of a pencil eraser head, the deer tick is the size of the pencil point.

Have any of you guys ever smelled moth balls?

WH is notorious for ticks and skeeters.
 
We pulled one off our dog before it bit her on Sunday after a walk to Davis. Based on the description it was a deog tick because it was larger than a pencil point but smaller than an eraser. We use front line and also had a lyme desease shot for her.
 
The past couple seasons there have been a lot of ticks at Watch Hill, but if you stay out of the grassy areas you can usually avoid them.
 
I just wanted to say that my nephew didn’t go into the grass or the sandy areas around the docks at all when we were at Watch Hill. We just went to the beach using the walkways and then back to the dock, that’s it. At the beach he did play in the sand but we were closer to the water then the dunes, and we have done that for years without the tick problem. When we returned to the boat we sat on the back of the boat and he played some board games on the dock with another boater’s child. He wasn’t near any pets other then those that walked by, so we felt that couldn’t have been the cause

I just thought the amount of ticks (7 to 8) we found on him after such a short period of time was very strange. We have over the years found a tick or two on us or heard of someone finding 1 or 2 on a pet, but the amount of ticks my wife found on our nephew I felt was very alarming.

We have over the years had to adjust our outdoor planning due to the mosquitoes at Watch Hill; I only hope we don’t now have to have a very real concern about ticks also.
What’s going on, ticks, mosquitoes, green flies I though this was suppose to be fun? Before too long we will be walking around with a protective suit at Watch Hill. Park Service please spray….Please….I truly love the beach but when will the Park Service finally see the light?
 
I'll just add that a couple years ago my daughter got a tick on her at Watch Hill, probably dropped on her when we went on the 'nature walk' boardwalk through the overhanging trees. It had started to burrow in and I was concerned what kind of tick it was.

Took it to the building opposite the store where a ranger sits (what do they call that, the nature station or something?) and the ranger had a couple of little bottles full of dead ticks of each type for comparison. So, they can help you figure out what you have if you are worried.
 
So are you guys saying the campgrounds are gonna be infested?

I truly have no idea what the tick condition is within the campgrounds. I feel it would be a very safe statement saying “are you kidding me, you want to stay where”? The one thing I will say is “you couldn’t pay me enough money to stay at the campgrounds.” Between the mosquitoes and now the ticks, how anyone would stay there is beyond me. I have camped out a few times but never at Watch Hill. Watch Hill is without a doubt a jewel, but camping out there for me is not an option. God bless those that even attempt to campout there
