Our marine toilet has an electric pump and when I open a valve and activate the pump,it draws sea water into the bowl for flushing. This works fine but I was wondering how difficult it would be to connect it to the fresh water system.Any pitfalls or drawbacks I should be aware of?Your help would be appreciated.

John,

Welcome to the board and thanks for joining. I have no personal experience with this type of converstion although I imagine it is pretty simple. I have a fresh water head and its plumbed off the sink cold water with a Tee.

I trust someone will come along and give you some good advice shortly.

Short answer is you shouldn't do it. The long answer is, well... long. You really have to be very careful about contaminating your fresh water supply.

I also used a T off the pressurized cold water faucette, then a 1 way check valve. Since the water flows from under the rim I can't ever see it contaminating the fresh water supply unless all these conditions happened, #1 the bowl filled to the top and into the flush circle slots, #2 the pressurized water was off and #3 the 1 way valve failed. Not likely to ever happen. Now I just purchased Raritans new Vortex Vacume Flush with the freshwater option which includes a valve that opens during the flush cycle.

In addition to what Bill said, my faucet is a bout 1-1/2 feet higher than the bowl flush valve. There is also about 3 feet of line from the faucet to this valve. The flush valve itself has a built in check valve (SeaLand)and it is a preasurized system. I dont think it would ever get contaminated, at least in my set up.

BTW - If lack of smell is what your after, you will be happy. I have absolutley no smell, and I actually USE the toilet, if you know what I mean.

Same here mine is also higher as well. My current Vacu Flush also has a check valve built in. Thanks for pointing the 2 additional safety features keeping the fresh water "fresh".

I just use the water from the shower/tap to flush the head with water...

Exactly what I was going to suggest. IMHO, it is the best of both worlds. I did this on my Regal with a manual head. Your head is not built to use a small quantity of water to flush. When on the hook, use the raw water connected to the system. When in port, use the fresh water from the sink/shower or plumb a separate "filler" hose plumbed into the house water.

Good luck. Welcome aboard. Thanks for anchoring up.
