Don't be silly. I've never owned a pontoon boat. Bowriders only. I am, however, looking at used 40-50 foot Searay Sundancers.

A 2” hole 2 feet below WL will flow about 6000 gph. This is why early detection is so critical and testing bilge pump / high water alarms regularly is a must.

I also believe in carrying damage control equipment. At least a couple plugs and a Nerf football. Bilge pumps don’t fix the problem, they just potentially slow it down enough to hopefully do something to mitigate it, then clear some water to regain stability once that’s done.

I think it was on this site years ago someone made this point. Something I had never read/heard so I picked up some plugs for this purpose and have kept them on my boats since.

Nineteen people on a pontoon in that part of the bay sounds like a lot, but I would rather wait for the investigation before assuming overcrowding was the cause.


Between the current, wind and cold water around Alcatraz, things can go bad very quickly even when a boat looks fine a few minutes earlier. Hopefully they can establish exactly what happened and whether loading, weather or some mechanical issue played a part.


With people dead and still missing, I think I would leave the Bob joke out of this one.
