I've decided to mount a depth gauge in our 1987 Chaparral 198XL. After 27 years of faithful service, it needs a new toy. Bought a HDR 200 off ebay with a puck style shoot through transducer of unknown make. Haven't figured out the best mounting spot yet (and I'll likely have questions on the best way to do that, thinking pipe mounted with 4200 and filled with AF) but I wanted to test it in a bucket of water first. Hooked up the gauge up to a jump box and filled a trash can with water and suspended the transducer in it. It did take a while to read (was just saying "ft" for a while) but then it started picking up between 2 - 4' as I moved it up and down in the trash can. Can was on wheels so I understand the raised lip at the bottom creates an air gap that it can't deal with so I had to move it around. Seems like it's reading ok. Clearly off a bit on the reading but I expect that at very shallow, that should be expected with this unit and I have no intention of being in that shallow.
Anyway, my question is this: there was a "ticking" coming from the transducer. At first I thought it was a leak and I was hearing air bubbles seeping out from it but it's very consistent and no bubbles rising so I'm guessing that's just the pinging it makes to take the reading and that all is ok.
Can you confirm?
