The dip stick on my big block Crusader transmission only shows “hot “ level. Does anyone know where the level should be in a “cold “ transmission condition?

Hmmm… if you are at the right level when hot, let it cool completely and mark the dipstick when cold.

I hear a grinding sound every time I reach 3100 rpm and the rpm’s jump , other than that the boat runs great .: I have a silverton 392 motoryacht with twin 454xl’s .: has anyone experienced this

Are you sure it is not cavitating or are the cutlass bearings worn?

Would cavitation cause the rpm’s to rise momentarily ?
I always thought so. It's like the props break free of the water resistance and spin faster. Try moving up to and through 3100 rpms slowly.

Yes, definitely. The first time I went through NY Harbor with all of the ferries I had cavitation and it scared me pretty good! RPMS would jump every so often when I was in the washing machine of wakes from different ferries. If yours is consistent at a certain RPM perhaps there is an issue with that prop.

Good point Chris, thinks like growth on the bottom, and props can facilitate cavitation.
