I'm trying to change the transmission oil and filter on my 8.1L gas engines with Hurst transmissions. The manual seems to call for SAE 30 weight oil - which seems a little strange to me. Anybody done this before?

Also, I'm having a hard time finding the transmission oil filters - anybody have a suggestion?

Thanks!

I was planning on changing oil and filter on my Carver 356 in a couple of weeks, let me know what you find out.

While I could be wrong, but I don't believe the is a filter for transmission oil. SAE 30 is regular oil if I am not mistaken and you definitely don't want to use regular oil in the transmission, you want transmission fluid which is different.

You might want to post this in the "Engines, Electric, Plumbing, etc." area for a better response, but I would suggest calling a mechanic in before attempting or look on Hurst's website.

I have ZF transmissions and they do use SAE 30 and ZF does not have a replaceable filter.

My ZF's use SAE 30 Heavy Duty oil, they have a spin-on replaceable filter and a separate sump filter.

just in case anyone else is interested - the ZF 63 IV-2.5 transmissions on my 8.1L Volvo Penta engines definitely do take Automatic Transmission Fluid. I believe the manuals that came with the boat are for the wrong transmission - and those do take SAE 30 weight oil - I think when they are used on diesel engines they probably use oil. I was able to get a hold of the Volvo Penta expert mechanic in my area who confirmed it - plus more importantly - if I had just read the cover to the sump transmission oil filter - it says right on it - "ATF".

Oh well - live and learn!

I have the ZF Hurst tranny's on my 355 Carver with Cummins 5.9 diesels. The tranny's do have a filter, about $50 each and take ATF. Don't use any ATF, call ZF Hurst in Ft Lauderdale to find out the correct fluid.

cmon guys, trannys use whatever the maker says to use. Some use ATF some use SAE30 dino or other lube oil, usually single grade. Use what the maker said not what somebody else uses.
