Transmission oil change/servicing

My transmissions whine in reverse. First, what could be the cause? Second, I'd like to service the transmissions...change the oil and whatever else should be done. I need some advise on what I need to do. They're v-drives....don't know the brand transmissions (I'm at home, boat is at the lake.) Thanks.
