Hello,
I went to look at a 2001 171 mako yesterday, the boat had stck power - 90hp merc 2 stroke. On the transom extending horizontally from the motor bracket and about an 1" below the top of the transom was a stress crack on both sides. It ran from the bracket out to where the transom rises to meet the port and starboard gunnels. Ofcourse the owner explained to me that it was simply cosmetic, but I couldnt be sure, can anyone give me any advice on this, has any one seen this on the 17 makos? Thanks and Happy Holidays.

This type of crack is common in many boats of this type and size. It is actually where the hull to deck joint in along the transom. On the sides, this is covered by a rub rail and often vinly insert. On the transom, it should have been glassed over and then gelcoated. Some boats only have a single layer of glass and then filler, occasinally no glass. You want to be sure that there is no delmamination or moisture in the transom core. It is not a fatal problem, but could cost a considerable amount to properly repair down the line.

mfdboating, This is a very common problem. How bad is it? Can you share a photo with us? Make sure when you hire a surveyor, he has a good moisture meter and possibly a thermal imager. I see you live in NY. Please let me know if i can be of any help.
