trim-tab replacement

I think I hit something in the harbor at full speed with the tabs down. I lost my port trimtab on my Carver 30' aft cabin, it is gone just bolt holes left. How do you access the bolts for the tab. To me it looks like you must take out the fuel tank??
I am taking it to the boat yard on Monday morning to get an idea of the cost and what caused the failure.
I was able to stop the water leak by pluging the holes with some screws.

I might re think Boating, this is not fun.
 
I'll bet you have Bennett Trim Tabs? Bennett is so good I'll bet they give you a new trim tab free to replace the one you lost. Call them. Bennett Marine
 
I'm not positive, but I thought the tabs were affixed by screws (and caulk) rather than bolts......if thats the case, it may make for an easier repair for you.
 
I'm betting on screws with maybe one bolt for bonding wire if system is bonded.
 
Thanks all got the boat to the yard today. You are all correct they are not thru bolted. Just screws and calk. Wow I thought that it was going to be a major problem to screw it on. I have it at City Boat Yard in Charleston they said that they get about 8 per year of missing tabs.
last question for the Manufaturer (Carver). Why would you use screws that go all the way thru the hull? So when you loose the tab you will have major water intrusion.
 
That's an easy answer PJ - Manufacturers have to give us something to complain about on this forum, and share creative solutions with our boating friends...
or another might be we need some more creative ways to INVEST (cough), I mean SPEND our money on this hole in the water I love so much!

I'm guessing tabs are not bonded to bonding system since you say there are only screws.
 
Get the boat back in the morning. Had trim tabs done, bottom painted(2 coats hard paint), heat exchangers cleaned, raw water hoses replaced, risers replaced, oh!!!!! and a new water pump.

This is why I might re think boating.

But I plan on crusing all day and go nowhere just to be on the water. We will see if that helps with the check writing pain.
