I saw an add to go out on a 3 day tuna trip out of montauk for $600. It looks awesome and I would like to go on one of these trips before the season ends. Just a few questions.

Has anyone ever gone on one of these trips?

If so what was your experience?

Can anyone recommend a ship that makes these trips?

Thanks,

MJK

Up until now, the yellowfin tuna bite has been just about non-existent. There were quite a few Bluefin tuna caught a few weeks ago, but the seas have been so bad the past two weeks there haven't been many reports. $600 per person is reasonable for a 3-day trip. However, I wonder if it's on a head boat or is it a private charter?

Obviously the Montauk boats will be fishing the northern canyons. The Jersey boats will most likely try the Hudson and Tom's canyons. My crew & I are hoping to get out sometime during October - either the Hudson or Tom's. I've only gone out on a "for charter" vessel once, however I've been out to the tuna grounds a bunch of times - with friends or on my boat. If you've never been offshore for an extended time, be aware that a 3-day trip can turn into an ordeal, if you are not expecting it. Most trips out of NJ are for a single overnighter. Figure on getting very little sleep, figure you'll be chunking all night and trolling during the day.

Send me a private message with your email and I'll point you to a few forums that discuss the trips and the various boats that target tuna out of NJ.

You've got mail!

I was reading the fishing reports from many of these boats and they seem to be catching some fish, but I don't know what is considered the norm.

Thanks,
