yes, the problem seemed to have centered on the leaking orings at the ball shaft seal. while i used shaving cream on a number of locations searching for a leak, the shaving cream may have also acted as a lubricant on the vacuum sensor shaft and made that operate more easily. the good news is that the problem is solved.
